Q. Has Nikolay improved since you last played him? Does he do anything differently now?
RAFAEL NADAL: What?

Q. Has Nikolay improved since you last played him? Does he do anything differently?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, I don’t think so, no? He’s always a big player, no? No. 4 in the world, No. 3, No. 5, since three years, no? He’s a big player.

Q. Were you surprised at just how aggressive Nikolay was today? He seemed to be standing very close to the baseline, taking a lot of balls on the rise, taking a lot of time away from you. Were you surprised by his aggression today?
RAFAEL NADAL: No. I think he play a good level. He played good match, but I didn’t play well today. So when you don’t play at 100% at this level against top players, it’s tough win, especially on hard surface. So I congratulate him more because he play better than me.
I played very good tournament. I won against very good players. I played at my best level against Berdych, against Blake, against Mathieu. So for that reason I beat against these top players. Today I didn’t play my best. He play well and I lose.

Q. Were you 100% fit physically? Are you feeling well?
RAFAEL NADAL: I feel perfect. I feel good. I didn’t have any problems, so just today I I didn’t found my rhythm on court, so it was tough since the beginning. I can’t against wind was impossible for me to win on my serve. If I win serves against wind is impossible to win the match.

Q. Especially your forehand today?
RAFAEL NADAL: My forehand?

Q. Yeah.
RAFAEL NADAL: I don’t know outside court, but inside the court I think is the backhand, not the forehand.

Q. Do you think that Nikolay is sort of the guy that at least here we don’t hear that much about? You know, everyone writes about you and Roger and Andy. Do you think he’s kind of the forgotten guy in the top 5? People don’t give him enough credit?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don’t think so, no. He’s well, he’s a different kind of player, for sure. He’s he’s a big player, but the people and you, you like to write more about Roger, about me, about Djokovic, about Roddick.
But one player can’t be three years in Masters Series or this year going to be the fourth without being a very, very good player.
So the people outside tennis can think different, can think about different way about Nikolay, but we know he’s a very, very good player.

Q. What are the things that make him different, and what makes him particularly difficult to play?
RAFAEL NADAL: I say before, I think he didn’t do nothing different. He start play much better. He played very good level. I didn’t play good match. That’s it.
Sometimes we all have to think more than the match, so the match was I didn’t play well. He play very well, especially after 3 3, because in the beginning I think he wasn’t play very good, too. But, anyway, I didn’t play well, too.
So later he start he come back, and in one moment of the match, in the 3 All, I have one break point, important point. I didn’t win this point. I have one mistake with the forehand. After this point he start playing match much better.
It was a big change because he was doing some mistakes. I was doing the same mistakes, too, but at this moment he changed a lot in the match. He start playing much better and was big change for me, no?
And I didn’t found a way. I didn’t see the way for for try to change the match, no?

Q. I know it’s very soon after the match for you, but would you be able to turn your mind to thinking about the clay court season, which is about to begin, and a few thoughts about the part of the season you like best?
RAFAEL NADAL: Right now I have Davis Cup, so I don’t think about I think about Davis Cup now. It’s important competition for us. Later I sure I’m going to think on clay season, but right now this is the tournament going to give me, I think, positive feeling for the clay season, no?
I play very good tournament against very good players, regularly in final, semifinal, semifinal. That’s always positive. When you are there every week finally you going to win. I think this.
So for sure it’s tough. I was playing very, very good tennis, but at the same time, I have to be happy about myself, about the last weeks, because I improve a lot my level, tennis level, and I was there all the time.
I think soon I going to win a title, no? I hope so. I hope so in Monte Carlo.

Q. You said that he didn’t change his style, but is there something about his style that didn’t allow you to get into your rhythm, or was it just one of those days for you?
RAFAEL NADAL: I say it three times. I didn’t feel my rhythm on court, so I play bad game today. It’s difficult to say more things. I said before he play better than me. For that reason he beat me. He play more aggressive, with more good feelings, forehand, backhand volley, dropshot.
I can’t win against player doing everything better than me today. Today, I didn’t play my tennis.

Q. The fact that they’ve switched to a two out of three format, seems like it would be a particular disadvantage to a player like yourself. I wonder how you and others feel about the switch from three out of five to two out of three in the scoring.
RAFAEL NADAL: I think it’s a positive change for the players, because we have the calendar very tight, very tough all the time, a lot of straight weeks and tough for us to play final with five sets.
But the intention of tennis is five sets. Big matches I remember some of the big matches, I know I played big matches, if I played big matches, was always five sets.
At the same time, it is disappointing for me.

Q. With the results of tournaments at that start of this year, do you see the men’s side being wide open right now as far as who’s going to become the dominant player?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don’t know. You know, we have only three months already on the season. Roger have lose more than usually, but it wasn’t due to bad results. He’s not far away about his level.
Djokovic is unbelievable, but at the same time, I am not so far away than Djokovic, too. Play very good start of the season. My goal was have 1,000 points after Miami. I say before the season my goal is have 1,000 points in Miami and I will have, I don’t know, 1,200, 1,250, something like this.
I improve my goal. Last year I have in this moment, this tournament, when I finish winning the Indian Wells I have 1025 points. I improve. It’s a lot of points on three months, so happy for that.

Rafael Nadal: No, non penso.

Ti senti bene?
Rafael Nadal: Mi sento benissimo. Sto bene.

Rafael Nadal: Il mio diritto?

Rafael Nadal: l’ho già detto tre volte.

Allo stesso tempo, è deludente per me.

Rafael Nadal: Non lo so.

Q. How nice does that feel, sitting next to that trophy?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Umm, it’s like ‑‑ I don’t think so, like if Nadal winning can say, oh, okay I have my three or five or tenth already. I have already winning many times.
But it’s different. Second time to win Masters Series, it’s like for me something important, because, you know, fighting every match, you know, save match point and coming to the final and win, beat Nadal in the final, first time in my career.
I think it’s ‑‑ I say for me it’s mostly crazy. (laughter.)

Q. Do you believe that you’re not really well known in America, but now after winning big tournament like this in America maybe…
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: To be famous? Here? (laughter.)
Yes. Really. Because to be famous really in tennis you need to win Grand Slam. Or, like, say Masters Series, but not one, you know, like a few or maybe every one.
But, yes, I would say if I would like to be famous by self (sic) I need to win tournaments here and to play very good tennis and this was to beat No. 1 and No. 2 in the world.
I think and then I have more fan. Because if you see I didn’t play on center court at beginning tournament, because, you know, we have here, Roddick, Blake, Americans, because we’re in America, and Federer, Nadal, Djokovic.
Yeah, is the best player in the world and should be playing on center court and get TV.
It’s good. But for beginning tournaments I don’t want to play on center court. (laughter.) It was good for me to play on Court 1 or Grandstand and, you know, to feeling little bit more confidence to come here for quarterfinal first time in center court and feeling much better.

Q. Everybody knows you’ve been going through a difficult time. How have you been able to play your very best tennis at this extremely difficult time in your life?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: I don’t feel now something difficult in the moment. Really I’m beginning this year I was feeling great. Okay, like I didn’t defend my Australian Open points, and I was starting, you know, feeling maybe this year starting for me so difficult because I need ‑‑ I’m No. 4 in the world and I need to defend points, many points, and what I can do, try to find my game.
It’s mentally maybe sometimes, you know, heavy in your head, thinking about ‑‑ it’s not something like how many money you do. It’s like important how you feel in tennis and just think about my points, defend points and how I lose my ranking. I was 10, you know, I can stay No. 4.
That’s was for me now, winning here, I can still, you know, No. 4.

Q. Was winning here the best performance of your career?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Yes, my tennis was so good today. Yes. I think I play ‑‑ it’s the best tennis of hardcourt season, yes.

Q. Was winning the title also, this title, the best thing you won in your career?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Yes, after Paris, Bercy, yes, because in Paris it was ‑‑ Federer not play, Nadal didn’t play and you have ‑‑ I have in the final, you know, Hrbaty, not to player. I was favorite here.
Here Nadal was favorite, and also in semifinal was Roddick favorite. Just beat two guys in two sets is like amazing for me.

Q. You had said out on the court you had never played that well in Miami before. What do you think what was the difference this time? What were you feeling? Was it really so much the racquet?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: No. Really, if you see in beginning also tournament I can’t lose in first round because I save match point.
But, you know, if something ‑‑ little bit lucky, you know, fighting and winning first, second, or third, then you become this, you know, feeling, even more confidence.
And then fighting in two‑and‑a‑half‑hour play matches because very long rally, and then you feel ball, you feel coordination. Here like is also you try to find ‑‑ you know, because in Miami humid, hot, windy. And.
You know, everything is like every day you feeling more comfortable and comfortable and you starting to play better and better.

Q. Rafa said he did not play well today. Gave you credit but he said he really had a bad day. How did you see it? Did you feel like you caused that bad day by rushing him a lot, by being more aggressive?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: You know, sometimes you feel you have bad day. Depends how ‑‑ against who you play. Because you see if I play against Nadal and not so fast, little bit slow, he have chance to make, you know, long rally and play very good from baseline.
I start ‑‑ if I play faster, him no chance. He need to run and he get no control. That’s was, for me ‑‑ yes, I see he didn’t ‑‑ he didn’t so good control from baseline. That’s was, I think, good for me.

Q. Tactically you played a perfect match, as you just said, and I remember after you won your semifinal match you said that you would consult with Djokovic to find out how he beat him in Indian Wells. Did you actually make that call or was it just a joke?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: No, no, no. Yes, it’s like I remember, you know, Djokovic beat Nadal in Indian Wells. He’s play the same game. Because I remember he have good forehand, backhand, baseline, and he played short cross to him and very good control. Also play fast.
You know, Nadal have no chance. Also Nadal can come to say he didn’t be top fit against Djokovic, because Djokovic play very well. That’s was sometimes you can lose and you feeling, I play well, but I cannot play against these guy so good.

Q. The situation with the investigation, you’ve been in limbo for so long now. Is this something you think about only when we bring it up? Is it on your mind every day? How would you describe it?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: In my mind it’s not every day in my mind. It’s in my mind if you ask me about this one. Because if ‑‑ now I go from here, from the press, I forget already, because for me it’s not now important.
It’s important for me now thinking about how I could now for Davis Cup to Moscow, and I need to prepare for the clay court. And I don’t know if I can play clay court now against Czech Republic, because I’m top ‑‑ I feeling good, but different surface.
That was what I’m thinking, and I don’t think about investigation. It should be my lawyer thinking, and my manager. But for me, it’s like really I’m forget straight what you’re asking me.

Q. How do you see the men’s side now? Do you think it’s wide open as far as who can be the dominant player this year? Roger Federer, for years, has dominated the men’s. Do you think it’s wide open where anybody can take over?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Yeah, just to say ‑‑ Federer didn’t won Australian Open, didn’t won Indian Wells, didn’t won here. Every different player winning tournaments.
Yeah, but it’s like season just begin. We have three more Grand Slams, and Federer is ‑‑ he’s Federer. (laughter.)
Wimbledon I think he’s favorite. Roland Garros, Nadal is favorite for Roland Garros, but physically in tennis just for the clay court.
I mean, we’ll see in a year.

Q. Do you think the Masters Series should be a best of five set final?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Ummm, no, for me it’s good in two sets. (laughter.)

Q. But as a general principle?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: No, but it’s enough. We have Davis Cup five sets, and Grand Slam. Because we have Davis Cup matches, and straight after we have tournaments, and you completely dead because you play Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and already Tuesday you need to play tournament.
It’s so difficult. It’s for us, we are not like animals. Maybe Nadal, but I’m not. I cannot do so much.

Q. Do you feel like you outlasted, as you call him, the animal today?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: No, it’s like if you see ‑‑ because Nadal, if you see tennis from Nadal, he’s strong. Good, you know, fighting every point. You know, he can hold long rally, and like what he like of clay court season.
Try to make guys tired in the match, and then you cannot holding. Like it’s happening with me against him in semifinal in Rome. I can’t holding. Third set in three hours I’m like already dead. He find power and he beat me.
That’s was ‑‑ yeah. Physically I’m not so strong. Maybe I have tennis better, I see I play very well, you know, tennis. I play tennis, try to make winners, but not like make so long rally and, you know, play five hours match.

Q. Can you speak a little about the fact you played so much against Nadal’s forehand, normally his better shot.
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Like, say, it’s not like because everybody thinking I want to play to his backhand, you know. I have good backhand cross. Why I need to play along line to him and think about what’s happening.
That’s was I tried to play faster forehand and tried to do something, you know, to make some winners. That’s was it was not think about play forehand or backhand, just feeling which ball, like, for me important, where I need to hit and feel more confidence.
Then I hit just feeling I can hit backhand, cross or along line

Q. But you haven’t always expressed passion for the game. I think people haven’t seen that in you. Do you think you showed more of that in this tournament, maybe, than in the past?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Maybe something change, you know, my tennis here in Miami. I hope, you know, like in the future is also. Like clay court season coming now, and for me it should be different tennis.
Maybe I feel more confidence because I beat very good guys here, and now and in the future I start coming and I play something maybe different, maybe much better, maybe much better, much faster.
I don’t know what to say now. For me it’s good I won here, and we’ll see how good I can prepare for the clay court season.

Penso – per me è pazzesco. (risata)

Ho iniziato l’anno in grande forma.
Ero n.10, sai, ora posso rimanere n.4.

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Si, ho giocato molto bene oggi.

Come ti sentivi?

L’hai davvero fatta quella telefonata o stavi scherzando?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO:No, no, no. Si, mi ricordo, Djokovic ha battuto Nadal a Indian Wells.

Ci pensi tutti i giorni? Come lo descriveresti?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: NO, non ci penso tutti i giorni.

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: No, secondo me va bene al meglio dei tre (risata).

D. Ma come principio generale?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: No, è abbastanza.

Non so cosa dire adesso.

Q. There was a point where Serena was serving 1 Love in the third set. I think it was 15 30, and it was a long point. You missed a forehand at the end that I thought you were going to make, and I think you lost several points in a row afterward. Did that feel like a turning point?
JELENA JANKOVIC: Yeah, I think those, you know, the first couple games in the third set were the crucial games, which I let them go, and I had game points in the first game, third set and the second.
You know, I had easy balls, you know, to go up 15 40, and I missed that shot. There was a lady who was little bit screaming during the point, and I lost, somehow, my focus on that shot.
Because, you know, when you’re playing you’re so focused. All of a sudden somebody screams from the crowd, and you in that split second you kind of I don’t know what happens.
I just made that mistake and I lost those games, and then I tried to come back. I tried to fight. I thought that Serena really had trouble closing out the match.
She looked so nervous out there. I could never believe that a girl who has won so many Grand Slams, so many tournaments, could be that nervous, you know, closing out the match.
It felt like it was her first time, you know, to win that tournament. She has won it so many times.
But she was very strong, especially in the first set, you know. When she’s playing her best tennis, when she’s serving well, it’s just tough to match up against her. Even though I work hard physically, I can never in my life be as strong as her.
So it’s just a big difference. But I was trying my best out there. It was windy. It was hard for me to, you know, play the balls where I wanted them. She was the better one today, and she’s the winner of this tournament.

Q. How bad did you feel at the start of the third set when you called for the trainer and the doctor?
JELENA JANKOVIC: Yeah, I was sick. You know, it was so really annoying for me to be sick, you know, and playing a final. I felt little bit weak today. I felt I couldn’t breathe.
But I didn’t I tried not to think about this. I tried just to play the game and just enjoy it and have fun.
Finally I finished the tournament so I can rest, because I’ve been on antibiotics. I think with the playing and a lot of action, being sick, you cannot recover. I think I need some rest in order to get better, and I finally can do that after today.

Q. Your resolve even from Love 3 down in the second set and then Love 5 down in the third set, your resolve never wavered at all. How did you find it in yourself to keep fighting?
JELENA JANKOVIC: That is one quality that I have, and there’s going to be days when I’m not going to play well, like maybe today, and there are going to days when I’m going to play well. But something that is always there is my fighting spirit, no matter what the score is.
If it’s 5 Love, 3 Love, whatever the score is, I’m not giving up. I’m still out there and I’m still fighting for every point, and I still believe that I can come back and win the match.
I was on my way, but unfortunately it didn’t happen.

Q. Serena has home court advantage here, but did you really feel the fans and the crowd rooting for you, especially late in the second set?
JELENA JANKOVIC: Yeah, the crowd enjoyed, you know, the match. I think it was for both, but obviously she’s American, and for sure she’s going to have many more fans here.
But I also had many, many fans, and especially Serbian fans. You could always hear them. They’re always loud, and you always know where they are.
And it’s just a fun atmosphere to play in front of the crowd. It’s amazing. It was a full stadium. It was a nice final overall.

Q. On the women’s tour is there anyone like her? Is she really unique in that way with just the power and the aura?
JELENA JANKOVIC: Just amazing power. It’s and I felt, you know how I felt, to be honest, it’s like heavyweight champion and I’m a feather champion, you know? That’s how I felt. I cannot match up against her. Just too much power for me to handle, especially on a good day where she’s playing well.
It’s amazing. I need to I need to improve some of the things, but I will never be like that.

Q. A couple of weeks ago in Dubai you said a couple of things. One, that you’re not really fit enough to go beyond the two hour mark. Well, it went 2 hours 25 today, and in those 25 minutes you caused her a lot of problems. The other thing was that you really need a full time traveling coach with you to bring out your best. Is there any update on either of those things?
JELENA JANKOVIC: Yeah. First of all, I feel like I’m making improvement on the physical part, because I’ve been working with a fitness trainer in Indian Wells and here throughout these two tournaments. I already feel that I’m making some progress, but it takes time, of course.
But I already feel a lot better than I felt in Dubai where I played a third setter and I couldn’t even move. I was too tired, too exhausted. I was completely out of shape. And now I’m coming back, I’m getting better and better, but it will take, you know, more time, of course.
But as for the coach, hopefully, you know, I was getting some help here in beginning of the tournament and as well in Indian Wells. Makes a huge difference, because I’m No. 3 player in the world without a coach, and I can just imagine what will happen to me if I have a full time coach that will be there for me all the time and share his knowledge and experience with me.

Q. You said at the end, you know, that you really had never seen her that nervous or whatever at the end and smashing the racquet, so upset.
JELENA JANKOVIC: That was scary, to be honest. Really. Really, I told her after the match, You really smashed that racquet to pieces. She’s like, I had to.

Q. But did you feel at that point that maybe she was vulnerable and you maybe had a chance there?
JELENA JANKOVIC: Of course. I was really I thought that I’m going to come back at 5 3. I was you know, I just said to myself, If only I can make one more game, 5 4, and go out on the other side and play with the wind and she’s against the wind. It’s so much tougher. She hits so hard.
But then I can still manage to play aggressive and dictate those points from that side, but I didn’t do it. So it was unfortunate, but I believe that I could have I could come back.

Ho commesso quell’errore e ho perso quei games, poi ho provato a rimontare, a lottare.

Q. Congratulations on winning your fifth title here, Serena. It proved to be lucky No. 7 in terms of closing out the match. Can you talk about the emotions that you went through as you watched the first six match points evaporate before your very eyes?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I thought I had like 15 matches points. I’m glad to know it wasn’t. I really thought I had 15. I don’t know. I just a couple of shots she hit really well, and then a couple of times I made some mistakes, and I was just like, it was just weird.

Q. When you smashed the racquet, that’s something we don’t normally see you do. What took you to that point?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I smashed a racquet? (laughter.) Oh, my God. Really? You sure it was me?

Q. Looked like you.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Oh, my gosh. Okay. Well, I guess maybe more than likely my hand must have been really oily and sweaty. That just doesn’t like you said, that’s just not me. God.

Q. Is it just you’re thinking you’re this close to winning, it’s three points away? I mean, we haven’t been in that situation. You know, what are you going through at that point that would make you do that?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Well, at that point, you know, more or less it’s me just like feeling like, you know, I’m almost there. Or, God, I would hate to lose this match after being up so much.
I think that’s more of the emotion. Like, How am I going to sleep tonight? “How many Ambien do I have in case I lose this match” type of situation? (laughter.)
So you know, you never want to go home like that. That’s really one of the worst feelings, and I think when you think about all that, then you end up putting a little more pressure on yourself.

Q. You get distracted?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yes.

Q. This tournament obviously, you know, five titles; you obviously feel very comfortable here. You just keep winning.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, I mean, I feel really comfortable here. I’ve been trying to feel this comfortable at the US Open and Wimbledon, which I’m bound to do. I’m right on schedule to feel comfortable there, too. I’m just I have like I said, I have so many friends here and it’s like playing at home and the crowd is always really happy and they’re rooting, so it’s a good feeling.

Q. What was your reaction to the crowd today, and did it help or hurt either one of you?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I think the crowd was really into the match. You know, I think it helped both of us, and critical points in the match.

Q. You look at American women’s tennis and there’s you and Venus and nothing else.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, obviously I feel like all the stuff myself and Venus and Lindsay and Chanda and Meghan Shaughnessy, all the players we’ve had and all the stuff we’ve been winning and doing, you would think there would be a few more. But maybe there’s some, you know, just struggling right now, and hopefully they’ll be able to come through

(risata). O mio Dio, davvero? Sei sicuro che fossi io?

D. Penso che fossi tu, si.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Oh, mio Dio. Ok. Dio.

Credo prevalga l’emozione. “Come andrò a dormire stanotte?”

SERENA WILLIAMS: Si, mi sento davvero fiduciosa qui.

NIKOLAY DAVIDENKO
N.DAVYDENKO b. Andy Roddick 7-6, 6-2

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. Have you ever played as well as that before?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Umm, hmm, against Roddick? No. But yes, I was really surprising. You know, it was coming and play very well from baseline and good serve.
But in first set I didn’t know if I can win this match, because I have no chance returning. He had good serve, you know, like amazing. I had no chance to returning. And, like, I feeling if he break me once, I cannot to win, you know, set.
That’s was it’s good I was coming to tiebreak, and, you know, tiebreak was, like, say, maybe lucky tiebreak. Maybe. It was important tiebreak. After tiebreak I won and, you know, win in second set.
But, yes, for me today was good baseline rally.

Q. You were returning very, very well, though, in the second set. Were you starting to see the ball better?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Umm, no. If you see, he get — I think he start to slow it. I think he get more top spin and I see like in the miles he already get maybe 120, 130. But before, always 135, 140. That’s was I have like really — I see the ball, but I cannot, you know, running to the ball.
And so many he kick in slicing to the forehand, and I try to run. It’s not possible. It’s was in the second set he just try to do the same and I have more chance. He was slowly.
I think because of already both tired, and, you know, I feeling also really tired in the second set and I play also slowly.

Q. You didn’t start that well. Why are you playing so well here? Because against Tipsarevic you also played well.
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Because I change racquets here after Indian Wells. I have the same racquet, Prince, just — I have before 16 string; now 18 string. Now I have more control. That’s was is surprising I have only one racquet. I play all five matches just with one racquet. I didn’t change any racquets.
I have not any one racquets. It should be coming, you know, next week to my home, but with one racquet I play three sets. I didn’t change, you know, like, and I was surprising myself, you know?

Q. Do you remember the match point against Gulbis? It was very difficult for him, and now you are here.
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: No, beginning I am — I didn’t play very well. I was like fighting. This was important to fighting, you know, first match and second match. I didn’t play very well against, also Bolelli. Also was three sets.
But then I was surprising. I played much better against Ancic, and yesterday I play very well. Yeah, today I play also good.

Q. What were your tactics tonight?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Really, I don’t want to, you know, say. Like, some changing tactic. Just hitting balls very good, you know. I think I have — with new racquets I have much better control from forehand and backhand cross.
I feeling I can hitting balls and I can control ball, like, good. I really feel good.

Q. What are you going to do if those strings break?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Umm, I have another racquet. (laughter.) I have two racquets, but second racquet is not so great. Like first one, I play all matches. So I don’t know what I do. I give to stringer and I try to know how possible, you know, keep in my match longer, come in all my racquets again.

Q. Obviously you’re playing at the very top of your form. You’re peaking just at the right moment. If you carry this good form into the final against Nadal, do you feel you have a very good chance there?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: I don’t know anymore. I really — like, he’s physically so fit. It’s amazing, because I saw he play in 1:00, you know, like super hot. And for him I think he don’t care, you know, playing night session or day session.
He running so much. You know, he fighting. I don’t know what I can do.
I remember against him in Rome played three sets three hours, and I was completely dead. (laughter.)
He was also tired, but in last points, you know, last game, I don’t know how he find, you know, his power, hitting his balls. You know, I have no chance already. Then this time — that’s was I was thinking how Djokovic beat him in Indian Wells so easy.
Maybe I need to ask Djokovic how he can beat Nadal.

Q. You have no racquet. Isn’t a professional tennis player supposed to change racquets every seven games or something like that?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Before, yes. Indian Wells I have seven racquets. I changing like if I have new balls I changing another racquets. But I have no racquets. I cannot change. I just — I have only one, I concentration on one.
And, you know, string holding all three sets, that’s what’s so surprising.

Q. One of your countrymen, Marat Safin has quite a reputation for breaking racquets when he gets a little bit angry. You’re not that sort of guy, obviously.
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Umm, not so. (laughter.) But sometimes I broke racquets, but not so many. Maybe just two, three in all year in the matches, but…

Q. What you just mentioned about Rafa shows how humble you are. I remember we had a interview in New York and you said the same about Roger. You were looking up to him. Don’t you think by now you feel confident being up there?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: I try to be slowly. I don’t want to say now I beat now everyone. I beat Roddick. It’s good for me. Nadal is good for me. He is No. 2. He’s good player. I don’t want to say about my final, you know. Just concentration, and, you know, for the match and try my best, you know. But I don’t want to say now anything about match.

Q. Are your powers of recovery normally good?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Umm, I like, you know, recovery more, because, like, say, I’m not so — I can’t recover in 24 hours really. I need to have longer. I need to have time longer. It’s good I have Sunday for final and should be day off tomorrow. Is good for me.

Q. Did you feel a turning point of the match came, Andy made great return of your dropshot, held serve, and then he broke you at Love and then you came and broke him right back. How important was that in the match?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Umm, it’s like every point, it’s important. It’s like — I don’t want to say just only I lost my serve and — because my brother say, You are the best returning players in the world. He know I can, you know, come back, if I try to return and if I returning ball, you know, I can win also, you know.
That’s was maybe helping me: More concentration. And maybe Roddick was not so good serving this time and I was broke him back.

Q. You’ve obviously had a lot of problems, a lot of very much chronic problems. Is this the most content you’ve felt since all those problems began?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: You know, I feel good now. I just — I forget really everything. Just it’s like still investigation, but, you know, everything what they do, it’s like my lawyer doing with ATP something.
And I just — I don’t hear anything about something, you know, this time already long time, this year. I don’t know anything. That’s was just feel great, just play tennis, and I hope I can play much better and better.

Q. But at the end of last year you were very, very down. You struggled big time. Now you seem so happy.
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Yeah. It’s like starting from zero, really. I like — I was like — I waiting for end of the year, you know, because one month with no press, nobody write about you, and, like, you feeling so happy.

Q. I’m glad you’re happy in your mind, but don’t you think this thing has carried on too long?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: You know, every cases can be long. I can wait. No problem. Because I still play tennis. I don’t know. I can — how long I can play. Maybe three, four years. I can wait, no problem.

If I, like, press don’t write against me anything bad, it would be good.

Q.: Hai mai giocato così bene come oggi?
Nikolay Davydenko: Uhm, contro Roddick? No. Ma sì, è stato sorprendente.
Comunque importante. Ho vinto il tiebreak, e ho vinto il secondo set.
Però, sì, oggi ho giocato bene dal fondo.

Q.: Nel secondo set hai risposto benissimo. Avevi cominciato a vedere meglio la palla?

Nikolay Davydenko: Beh, no. Penso abbia rallentato lui.

Sempre una partita in 3 set. Però ho giocato molto meglio contro Ancic, ho giocato bene anche ieri, e oggi, sì, oggi ho giocato benissimo.

Q.: Qual è stata la tua tattica, stasera?
Nikolay Davydenko: Mah, non saprei dire. Diverse cose.

Nikolay Davydenko: Non lo so.
Corre tanto. Sai, combatte.
Forse dovrei andare chiedere a Djokovic, come battere Nadal.

Nikolay Davydenko: Beh, no ( risata). Forse 2-3 volte all’anno, nelle partite.

Nadal è tosto, per me.

Q.: Ti riprendi in fretta, normalmente?

Non ne so niente.

Perché continuo ancora a giocare. Giocherò forse altri tre, quattro anni. Posso aspettare.

ANDY RODDICK

N.DAVIDENKO b. Andy Roddick 7-6, 6-2

Q. Would you say it was a quick, the turn around was too quick or this guy just played out of his tree tonight?
ANDY RODDICK: Umm, no, I mean he’s capable of playing well. That’s probably the best he’s played against me, and I think probably the thing, you know, about him is you normally don’t see about him is the way he served tonight.
I remember last fall he had problems getting the serve in. Came out and served, I don’t know what he ended up with, 75% plus. He goes for first serves, which he doesn’t do that often. He made it tough for me in rallies. Because once he gets on top of a rally, he’s pretty good about switching directions and driving the ball to the corner.
So I think his serve helped him a lot in his service game as far as taking control of the points.

Q. Did you have any hangover from last night, or was that not a factor?

ANDY RODDICK: No, I didn’t drink last night. Not a drop. (laughter.)
I don’t know. I mean, obviously it was a pretty emotional high. I don’t know. I felt like I was there. I felt like I actually hit the ball okay tonight. My serve kind of tailed off at the end there, but I think he returned pretty well, also.
I think the biggest difference between last night and tonight was my transition game. When I came in I didn’t have enough on my approach shots, and then kind of, as a result of that in the second set, when I got broken the second time I missed some because I was maybe trying to then correct it too much and actually put something on it.
I actually missed a couple — hit them okay, just missed them. I think that was the difference. I was pretty flawless in transition last night.

Q. You made that great return on the dropshot. You held, and then broke him with dynamite game, and then, boom, gave it back. Was that like the turning point, you feel, in that match?
ANDY RODDICK: No, because I didn’t play a horrible game that game.
You know, he was a little bit fortunate with, you know, like let cord on break point end of the breaker. But I didn’t feel like I played a horrible game. I think the game after that when I got broken and I missed a couple of approach shots that were maybe not routine but pretty close to routine as far as, you know, making them 9 out of 10 times.
I think that was the breaking point for me.

Q. A powerful player as yourself, does it ever surprise you how much power he generates out of that rather spindly body?
ANDY RODDICK: You know, I gotta go with it’s more court position than power. He doesn’t give an inch. He stands kind of similar to Andre. He stands right on the baseline and picks it off each way.
He kind of just picks a spot and goes for it. You know, I think when he’s on he’s very, very good, and then sometimes you’ll see him lose in the first and second round of tournaments.
It’s kind of — that way is either going to work or it’s not depending on if you’re zoned in tonight. I thought he was good tonight.

Q. Difficult round for you going quickly over to Davis Cup and everything indoors?
ANDY RODDICK: No, I think I’ve had worse turnarounds as far as Davis Cup. Last year I might’ve hit two hours that week because I had a torn hamstring when I tried to play last year. So it’s probably better circumstances this time around.

Q. You leave here with mixed emotion? At one point you knocked Roger off. One thing you took care of, but didn’t quite finish the job?
ANDY RODDICK: Sure. Yeah. I mean, losing sucks. Winning is great. I don’t know if you’re going to find an athlete that says anything different than that.
But I feel — biggest thing is I think you want to leave a tournament not having, you know, lack of confidence. I’m going into next weekend feeling like I’m hitting the ball well, feeling like I’m playing well.
You know, I’ll choose to leave here looking at the positive, and my year as a whole so far has been pretty solid, and, you know, spectacular in some matches. So, you know, I’ll leave here — I’m obviously disappointed tonight and it was a real good opportunity for me here.
But at the same point, you know, to not play your best early on and get through matches and then have a win like I did over Roger was big for me, and hopefully that will stick with me a little bit more.

AR: No, perchè non ho giocato così male in quel game.

RAFAEL NADAL

RAFAEL NADAL b. Tomas Berdych 7-6, 6-2

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. Pretty incredible second set. You won the last 12 points and no unforced errors. Were you feeling pretty on top of him?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I think very good tournament. I think I am playing very well this tournament, so today was great match, too. Because it’s very tough player like Berdych. Happy for the win.
First set was tough, especially in the end, because I have a lot of chances and never finish, the set.
But I think in the beginning of the first set it was very important. To be very concentrate with my serve. Because against — wind was very tough. And I have some breakpoints against, but I can be very concentrate all the time.

Q. Did you feel like after you double-faulted to lose the set on the 7th set point that he kind of went away, that you defeated him mentally at that point?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don’t think so. I think I had a lot of chances before. First set point with my serve, 5-3, 15-40 and 5-4, 6-3 in the tiebreak. A lot of chances.
I did not win any, one, but in that moment I was feeling playing better than Tomas in the moment, because I feel — I all the time (in Spanish). I was ahead all the time in the score.

Q. How much better are you as a hard-court player now than three years ago when you were in the final here?
RAFAEL NADAL: Always we must have the comparison. I think it’s impossible compare it. 2005 I won in Montreal, I won in Madrid, I played the final here. The numbers are saying I’m not much better than 2005, so…
I think I have more years, more experience. I’m better player than 2005. I don’t have any doubt about this. But it’s impossible to compare it. It’s totally change feelings.

Q. Are you surprised that it’s Andy and not Roger?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, when you have one score, head to head like 14-0, last 14 times, for sure it’s surprise, but when you play against Roddick all the match depends on points.
So if you are not playing at your 100% and if he’s serving well, he’s playing well, he play some points important points well from the baseline, you have very difficult match.

Q. You had a tough tournament in Indian Wells and took a pretty tough loss there. I was just wondering how long did it take you to overcome that emotionally or being down about that? In general, how did you deal with a loss? Because you’ve come back and are playing really, really well.
RAFAEL NADAL: No one hour. I think Indian Wells I play a very good tournament. I arrive there without my best confidence. I lost in Rotterdam against Seppi and Dubai against Roddick without playing. Improving a little bit my level against Roddick in the quarterfinals of Dubai, but far away than the level that I’m playing right now.
So I know won against Tsonga and Blake was a very good win for me for my confidence, and I arrive to semifinals a little bit tired without believing 100% in my chances in that match.
But after my match against Djokovic, I always have a positive thoughts. I play very good tournament, played terrible match today, I thought, in the moment. But why not? I can play very good tournament in Miami because I am playing better. My feeling was I’m coming better every day.
So I arrive here and I practice every day very well. I say the press conference before tournament I was playing very well, and right now I am in the finals. So anything can happen in this final.
Anyway, for me, going to be very important tournament, this one, because play a final in Masters Series event, beating against big players and playing, I know I am playing at one of my best levels.

Q. Every player wants to wins tournaments, Grand Slams. Where does achieving the No. 1 ranking fit for you? How much of focus is there on that? What would it mean to you if that were to come?
RAFAEL NADAL: For me, the most important thing is feeling well, feeling playing well, and feeling at the best level. If I am at the best level I have chances for being No. 1, for be No. 2, for be No.3, for No. 4, or No. 5.
But my goal is try to be in the top positions. So I have three years in a row No. 2. This is unbelievable position, because with my points, we have a lot of No. 1s before.
So I think it’s — I can’t say too much about this, no? Just try to continuing playing at the same level like last years, and if I have any chance for be No. 1, I will try to do.
But for me it’s not obsession to be No. 1, no? Just I always try my best. I am not finding the No. 1. You are No. 1 or you are not No. 1. That’s my feelings.

traduzione a cura di Paolo Rogora

Incredibile secondo set. Come ti sei sentito?

Avevo perso a Rotterdam contro Seppi e a Dubai contro Roddick senza giocare.
Sto giocando bene ora.
Ho pensato in quel momento, ma perché no?Posso giocare bene a Miami perché sto giocando meglio.

TOMAS BERDYCH

RAFAEL NADAL b. Tomas Berdych 7-6, 6-2

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. Do you think you played a little too defensive out there today?
TOMAS BERDYCH: Well, I don’t think so. I mean, the first set was the key of the match, and I unlikely lost a couple of points in the end of the set.
That’s happened. He was playing really solid and he took the first set, and then I have to say that, like — well, I get a little bit tired, and then I — I mean, if you are not 100% with him, then it’s really tough to play.

Q. The double fault was your first of the match but very crucial?
TOMAS BERDYCH: Yeah. I mean, once — it has to happen like for the first time. That’s what I said. Like unluckily it was in the tiebreak. It was really close.
I mean, I was down in the tiebreak. I came back, and maybe if I made the first set, everything can be different.

Q. Was his deep topspin shots bothering you?
TOMAS BERDYCH: Well, I mean, it’s really tough shot, and — to play, I mean, that’s his style of the game. I mean, you have to take it like all together. It’s not just about the spin or something like that.
Yeah, I mean, he’s a great player. He’s using his weapons and it works.

Q. What do you think you have to do to maybe get to the next level? Maybe beef up your backhand a little bit?
TOMAS BERDYCH: Well, I’m trying to move for the next level. I don’t know which kind of level you mean. I’m doing everything for that. I think that more important is consistency of good results.
If I can bring like semifinals from every single tournament what I’m going to play, then it’s going to be fine.

Q. He had never beat you on hard court before. How much of a better hard court player is he now than maybe even a year or two ago?
TOMAS BERDYCH: Well, I think he starts to play more aggressively on the hard court, and I think that’s why it’s changing.
Yeah, he can lose like maybe more matches on the hard, but I think his game is different because he’s trying more attack the ball, playing more aggressively and then of course you going to start to make more unforced errors.
But then if you are just standing like two meters behind the baseline and trying to just put the ball in, then if me or let’s say James Blake a going to play with him, then the match is not going to be that tough for us and we can beat him I think every single game.
But now when he starts to play more aggressive, he can make more winners and a little more unforced errors, but I think that’s what tennis is about.

Q. Can you look ahead to next week and the Davis Cup, Russia, what your feelings are and how that might play out?
TOMAS BERDYCH: Yeah, well, it’s going to be really tough. It’s going to be really hard for us, especially for me, because, I mean, to get from here to Europe and then to Russia, it’s not going to be easy.
Then come after the long trip here in the States, come back and play indoor on the clay with really tough opponents from Russia, it’s really not going to be easy.
Well, the atmosphere is going to be different. It’s going to be team match, so I’m looking forward for that. I like all the Davis Cup ties and everything. So we’ll see.

Q. If I understand correctly, you weren’t physically completely fit for the back-to-back tournaments in the States?
TOMAS BERDYCH: I didn’t say that. I mean, I just said that it’s really too long to play two tournaments for one month and stay here. So that’s what just happened in the second set today. I wasn’t that fit and that’s all what I said.

Q. Speaking of long trips, are you planning to play the Olympics?
TOMAS BERDYCH: Well, I mean, it’s long time to thinking about Olympics, but, well, my memories are great for the Olympics, and I don’t see any other like reason right now that I’m not going to go there.
I mean, it’s once in the four years. For me, it was great experience, and, well, so far I’m healthy and everything is going like we wish. So far I’m going there.

Q. Yourself and Nicole Vaidisova are the No. 1 Czech players. Talk about the level of expectation in the Czech Republic, considering where you might end up in the game. Perhaps in the past you’ve been written about as perhaps potential world No. 1s. Talk about the level of expectation.
TOMAS BERDYCH: Well, I mean, expectations is one thing and like real tennis and real results are the other things. It’s really nice if somebody is going to be talking about, or like especially the media and the people who used to think just with a pen and paper and writing some things, and then they going to be talking that, I don’t know, you should serve better and play better, and these things.
Well, I think it’s not a good way. I think we are professionals in our sport and they’re professionals in their work, so let’s keep with this.
I mean, I’m trying to do my 100% what I can, and I’m trying to step a little higher in the ranking. I’m still young and we will see; the career is really long.

Prima o poi doveva accadere.

D. Non ti aveva mai battuto sui campi duri in precedenza.

Ora come ora andrò.

Q. Very fast match. Can you talk about that?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Umm, what I can tell, just play fast and pretty good, good serve and good return.
It was — today was very hot. You know, balls for me fly much better and I have good control. First three matches played three sets. Today was I think, for me, more, you know, easy match.

Q. You said, you know, Roddick might win this. Talk a little bit about Roddick. I know you haven’t beaten him either. Talk about his game a little bit. What’s tough?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Great serve. Just, you know, very tough, you know, to returning, because good confidence just in the serve make so many aces and play very good forehand, you know, try to fight.
He knows he can win easy serve, and then try and, you know, make some risk in returning, and try to, you know, try to win, try to fight, just one make break and for him enough.
Just can win, you know, 6-4, 6-3. That’s was — okay, it’s like Roddick is not Federer. Just little bit slow, but we’ll see.
Roddick have good touch and also top fitness also. Very difficult to beat him.

Q. What are your thoughts on the Olympic Games this year? Both your thoughts personally about Beijing and also about the status of tennis at the Olympics.
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: It’s really tough, like, say, after America fly to China and then come back. I was already flight. I fly Peking after US Open and it was 12 hours fly and 12 hours difference between U.S.A. and Asia. That’s was is completely day and night, and recovery maybe three or four days. It’s so tough.
This’s was, you know, coming there, three or four days recovery, come back to America and recover again, it’s not so easy.

Q. Regarding the Olympics, we understand the situation with so much flying. But you’re almost like better about it, aren’t you, playing in one place one week and then another place the next? You’re definitely committed to the Olympics, are you, or are you thinking about…
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: I’m thinking about it. I don’t want to say 100% I go to Olympics in consideration for Olympic Games, because for me it’s not very important in America to play and play after Olympics US Open also.

Q. I see you’ve never won a Grand Slam. How important to you is that as a goal?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Oh, now like winning Grand Slam, it’s very important, and you think about are you also going to also tell about Olympics, yeah? Yeah winning gold is also important.
But every tournament win, is very important. Doesn’t matter whether you win. It’s already in your memory. I don’t think about — now I don’t think about any Olympics or any Grand Slam tournament. Just think about what I play here in Miami, and what’s coming future I don’t know.

Q. Because normally the top players, they say they really focused on the Grand Slams, and you’re saying you’re focusing on everything, not specifically the big tournaments.
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: No, no, no, on Grand Slam I really focus, yeah. I try my best in Grand Slam, but I try in every tournament, you know, my best.

Q. Un match molto veloce. Puoi parlarcene?
NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Umm, cosa posso dire, ho solo giocato veloce e piuttosto bene, ho servito e risposto bene.

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Grande servizio.

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Ci sto pensando.

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: No, no, no, sono molto concentrato sugli Slams, si.

ROGER FEDERER

ANDY RODDICK b. ROGER FEDERER 7-6, 4-6, 6-3

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. The game, penultimate game I suppose, you look at it, you were right in it, and suddenly you hit three, four poor shots and it slipped through your fingers.
ROGER FEDERER: Sure, it’s a tough way to finish the match, no doubt. I’ve been on a good run on my serve this week. To end it this way it’s sort of disappointing, but what are you going to do? It’s over now.
I think I did well, you know, to hang in there. Maybe this is one of the matches I should have won against him because he’s had some other ones where I think he was supposed to win, but this time around it went his way.

Q. What disappointed you most about your game, Roger?
ROGER FEDERER: Sort of dominating the tiebreaker, and I guess my last service game. You know, I think I didn’t make it tough enough for him to come up with good shots. I missed too many, and I think that was the disappointing part about the match today.
All in all I think it was still a good performance, and I think Andy served really exceptionally well yet again tonight.

Q. Is it a problem you think of concentration?
ROGER FEDERER: It happens. What are you going to do? You work hard so it doesn’t happen. Sometimes it does. It’s unfortunate, you know. I needed some first serves. Maybe I just should have placed, put the ball into play instead of trying to come over it.
It’s just decision here and there, and sometimes the opponent plays well and puts you under pressure. That’s why I always said it’s tough to play against Andy, you know that serve. He’s always going to have a chance. That’s why I’m quite amazed about my record against him.

Q. To us looking out, the lights don’t appear as strong as they do in other places. With the pace of that serve is it more difficult here?
ROGER FEDERER: I guess the difficult part is going from maybe day to night. I’ve struggled with this before here, but I think I didn’t particularly struggle tonight.
I had some tough ones against Johansson back here, because the difference is quite drastic. I think the lights are very close to the court, and I think that’s what makes quite a big difference, you know.
Now, if it’s low lighting, I don’t necessarily think so. I just think the lighting, it’s really close to the court, so it makes it maybe a little bit different.

Q. For someone who’s so used to playing in finals, when you get into a run of not playing in finals, do you get a little tense at all or worry about taking that one step?
ROGER FEDERER: No, I mean, I am just sort of disappointed not to see my name, playing in the finals. I mean, it’s just disappointing seeing other guys battling it out, you know, where I think, you know, I have the game to obviously play there, be there as well.
You know, being so close, sort of like last year. I think if I would have beaten Cãnas I would have had great a chance to win here again, and I feel the same way tonight.

Q. What’s your program now? Do you know what you’re going to do?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, few days off, start working out again on clay and go to Estoril.

Q. Where would you rate your physical condition compared to your best form or best shape?
ROGER FEDERER: I asked Pierre, my trainer, when he left, what he thought, and he said he thought I was at 95%. I thought that was good enough for me. For me 95% or 100% for me is hardly any difference to me.
It’s not like I’m at 40%. That was a good answer from his end. I’ve been working hard trying to get back in shape. I feel like I’m fine, you know, it’s just a matter of getting the amount of matches in.
I think I got that again these last couple of weeks, which was really important to me. I wish I could have been in the finals, but, you know, I just couldn’t play maybe well enough when I had to.

Q. You told us the other day you’re going to have one more test just to clear up the mono situation. Where are you going to have that done?
ROGER FEDERER: I guess it depends on — I have no idea when I’m going to do it and if I’m going to do it. It was sort of an idea I had. I’ll see if I’m going to do it when I go back to Switzerland.

Q. Last week you lost to Mardy Fish in Indian Wells. Today you’ve lost to another American, Andy Roddick. Do you think perhaps with these series of matches you’re having with Sampras that perhaps they’re learning from the old master about how to play against you?
ROGER FEDERER: I really doubt that. (laughter.) Those surfaces are too quick, and nobody plays like Pete, so it has nothing to do with these matches.

Q. But do you feel 100%?
ROGER FEDERER: I feel fine, yeah. I mean, sort of I guess I would still need a test maybe of a five-setter, but I’m not going to get those until the French Open comes around.
All can I do is practice real hard and make sure I feel fine towards the end of the practice sessions if I work up to four hours, and that’s really I think the ultimate test.
For these type of matches here it’s no problem. I’m backing them up easily. When I’m — on practice weeks I practice three to four hours a day, and, you know, when I play here, 45 minutes and I play an hour and 15 and then I play two hours, it’s nothing compared to the practice sessions.
I feel good myself, really. I guess sort of the coordination and some little things are still missing because of lack of matches, but that usually comes along and I start to play better and better as the matches went on.
It’s disappointing to play a bad game and then think you played bad. That’s not really what happened. It’s just maybe a few points here and there and Andy took advantage of it.

Q. Where will your first play test be?
ROGER FEDERER: In Estoril.

Q. You’ve not played there before, have you?
ROGER FEDERER: First time.

Q. Will you be in Rome?
ROGER FEDERER: And Monaco and Hamburg. I’ll see you there.

RF:No.

Q. Che programma hai adesso? Cosa farai?

RF: Estoril

Q. Non ci hai mai giocato prima, vero?
RF: no, è la prima volta.

Q. Andrai a Roma?
RF: si, anche a Monaco e Amburgo. Ci vedremo là.

SERENA WILLIAMS

SERENA WILLIAMS b. Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6, 7-5, 6-3

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. What a superb match. It was probably worthy of a final. You must be very satisfying for you to come out on top having dug so deep?
SERENA WILLIAMS: It’s always good to come out on top. I think I was a little disappointed in the way I played, but, I mean, I’m just moving on.

Q. Talk about the back injury and when you felt you were moving better. Looked like the second set.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, the physio came out, and I started to feel better right after she treated me. The first time I felt a lot better, and each time she came out it kept getting better.
I just got stuck, like out of nowhere I just got stuck. It was just completely out of the blue, but it got better.

Q. Do you recall which shot or movement it was?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I don’t remember if it was a movement or a shot. I don’t remember. It was a long time ago, but I do remember it was just all of a sudden I felt stuck.

Q. Was this a match where mental toughness was really what it was all about to win this?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I do think it was about being mentally tough and making the right shots at the right time and just never giving up. I played a really good opponent today who has been down several match points in this tournament already, so I knew going in she wasn’t just going to give it to me.

Q. What about the fitness factor? Nearly three hours, hot afternoon, and you seemed to be strong at the end.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, no, I don’t feel tired or sore or anything at all. I don’t feel I feel like I’m really fit. Even right now, I’m not tired.

Q. Talk about the regimen you did since the Australian to get into such good shape.
SERENA WILLIAMS: I’ve been working really hard.

Q. Specifically?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I’ll write about it. You can buy it.

Q. You said in the past you have a home court advantage here. Did you get any kind of a charge in the third set?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Well, I had great support from the first game on, which was really good. It was clearly great support.
This is one of my favorite tournaments. I love playing here. All my friends come out. I promised tickets for Saturday, so I was, like, I can’t lose. I’ve got to stay in there a little bit longer. It was mainly my motivation.

Q. At the start of the second set you were two breakpoints down, and you held onto that service game, and you held serve for the rest of that set and then broke Kuznetsova to win the set. I mean, obviously holding onto that first service game was crucial, wasn’t it?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, it’s definitely crucial. I mean, in this match, it seemed like every point was crucial, like at any point the match could have turned or went a different way. It was really a good match, just to focus on each point. You really have to be focused for everything.

Q. It seemed like early on you were having problems with the forehand. What improved with that and just kind of what were you doing or not doing?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, I made some errors on any forehand for some unknown reason, and I wasn’t doing the right technique. I thought about my third round match or whatever, fourth round or third round, Pennetta, how I kept making the errors. I thought, okay, I can correct it. And I corrected it and went on instead of just dwelling on it.

Q. After you played so well against Justine, was it tough to overcome what might be seen as a natural letdown?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I felt when I lost the first set, I felt I’m not the type of player to beat the No. 1 player and then come out and lose the next match. That’s never been my strategy. It’s never been my game. So I just maybe got off to a slow start and didn’t take some opportunities.

Q. I think you’re going to play Charleston but not Amelia?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah. I don’t think I’m entered in Amelia but I know I’m entered in Charleston. I’ll definitely be there. I look forward to it.

Q. How important is that event as a jump off to the red clay in Europe, or are they so dissimilar surfaces?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I love that event. I have a lot of support there. I never won that event and I would like to win there. I did terrible last year, so I have nothing to lose when I go there.
All I do is win some rounds and, you know, help my rankings so that’s what my next goal is. I have a couple tournaments to do that, just looking forward.

Q. Is the green clay a good jump off for the red clay, or are they so dissimilar?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I think they’re similar. I mean, clay is clay. They’re both going to be a lot slower than the hard court. The green clay isn’t as slow as the red clay, but it’s getting you prepared for that. I grew up on green clay, so I’ll be fine.

Q. You’ve seen how tough it is to be ranked No. 1 and be down lower and having to meet seeds early on. Do people really appreciate how difficult it is to fight your way to a title from, say, No. 8 or 9 seeds than it is form the No. 1 position?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, it definitely is difficult. You have to play the seeds earlier, like the No. 1 players sooner. My whole theory is eventually you have to play everyone, so that’s how I look at it. Seems like I’m not ranked as high as I want to be right now.

Q.: Una partita stupenda.

Mi ero bloccata, così all’improvviso. Proprio senza preavviso, però adesso va meglio.

Q.: Ricordi il movimento o il colpo quand’è successo?

Mi sento molto in forma.

Serena Williams: ho lavorato molto duramente.

Q.: Dettagli concreti?
Serena Williams: Scriverò un libro su questo. Potete comprarlo.

Vengono tutti i miei amici.

ANDY RODDICK

ANDY RODDICK b. Roger Federer 7-6 4-6 6-3

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. Great evening, Andy. What, besides the score, pleased you the most about what you did?
ANDY RODDICK: I thought I stood the course mentally pretty well. I feel like, you know, for the second set and a lot of the third he was — he was starting to play pretty well, starting to hit that first ball.
I think he might have missed — I think he had one unforced errors in the second set, and I kind of just tried to stay there. I didn’t get discouraged, I didn’t, I don’t know. I just stayed in there mentally, which was a good thing.

Q. How encouraging is it, in all seriousness, to actually put an end to this run that everyone kept popping off about?
ANDY RODDICK: Well, it’s nice. You know, and to kind of build on Dubai and to have wins over 1, 2, 3 in the world early in the season is a good thing. It’s probably what’s been missing the last two, three years, so it is encouraging.

Q. Were you stunned? I know you are were on the other side of the court, to see him unravel like he did in that little string at the end there?
ANDY RODDICK: Yes and no. I figure I was due. He hadn’t missed a ball in a crucial moment for about six years against me. I figured the law of statistics had to come my way eventually.

Q. Was he giving you sleepless nights with this streak?
ANDY RODDICK: Sleepless nights? No. Luckily I think I’ve always been able to separate tennis and life, and in the grand scheme of things I’ve never once felt sorry for myself or said that, you know, I live a blessed existence.
I get to wake up and play tennis in the morning, and my by biggest problem is losing to the best player possibly ever, that’s still better than most people’s.

Q. In the break game, 3-4, Federer serving, third set looked like it was a couple of inches off the ground. Did you have a sense after you hit that shot that maybe this was the game where it’s finally going to get him?
ANDY RODDICK: It’s a big difference playing Love-15 and 15-Love. Roger rarely loses a lead in a game or in a match. He plays from the front about as well as anybody I’ve ever seen.
It just makes that next point so much tougher being down Love-30, you know, been there. So I wanted to put an emphasis on winning the first point, and I didn’t know if I was going to make that shot.
I kind of just flipped it up there and it found a piece of the court that wasn’t out, which was nice of it. You know, I don’t think you get overly excited when you’re Love-15 but you’re closer to Love-30

D. Grande Serata,Andy.

ANDY RODDICK: Si e no. Immagino che mi fosse dovuto.

ANDY RODDICK:Notti insonni?

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA

SERENA WILLIAMS b. Svetlana Kuznetsova 3 6, 7 5, 6 3

Q. Seemed like you really played well. Controlled the match most of the way. Where do you feel like you let it slip away?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Well, I think if I played the right points at the right time it would be a little bit more lucky and I would have done it in two sets, because I was a set up and 15 40 and there was a possibility to go for it.
To me, it seemed when I was on the top of the result and top of the game, I was playing too careful and she was better. She was playing better.
When she was up, I was playing better. You know, I mean, it’s like it’s uncomfortable, this situation, because I was playing well. I felt like I doing the right thing, you know.
But maybe sometimes in the third set she served better in the end. She played good. But I still, every game, I had opportunity, I had it like every single game.
Sometimes she just played incredible shots. You know, it’s just tennis. She just played better in the third set. I think I could have finished it in two, but she’s a good player, you know. It was a tough match.

Q. What’s the big difference mentally and emotionally between playing Serena and Justine?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: They’re both very tough players. They’re one of the best players. Serena at top of her game, it’s very hard to play her. When Justine is in top they’re just so different. Just different.
Emotionally it’s the same thing. You just play somebody, one the best athletes in the world and I count myself also one of the best players. It’s exciting, because it’s really you have to play your best level, and in important moments you really have to take the right decision because you wouldn’t have many chances during the match.

Q. What happened at match point? The second set you had kind of a floating volley and you netted it. You weren’t sure what to do with that one, or…
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: No. I mean, I just didn’t work because I have to move to the ball. I had problems playing with the wind sometimes, because like forehands I was missing some because I was not moving well to it. It was hard for me to get used to play against the wind and then two games you have to go for it, so I didn’t go to it. I had to do extra two steps.

Q. When she broke you in the eighth game of the third set, she did a backhand off the net and it kind of clipped the net and you kind of netted the next one. Was that just a tough break?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Yeah, I think this game I had so many chances. It was amazing. Every time I felt like I hit it, but I could not take it, you know? Like you have cheese here and you cannot just eat it.
I mean, I had opportunities so much, but she played good shot or something would happen and I would so many times I would not go for it. I would like to see next time me be a bit more aggressive and play better when I’m on the top.

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Sono entrambe avversarie dure.

ELENA DEMENTIEVA

JELENA JANKOVIC b. Elena Dementieva 6-1, 3-1 ret.

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. When did the injury start occurring? Is it the lower back? Is that what you’re talking about?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Yeah, it just started yesterday, and I was just having problem with the back.

Q. So before you even stepped on court today you were concerned about it?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Yes. I started to feel it yesterday.

Q. How did it hinder you out there? Just in every shot or just certain shots?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: No, it was difficult to play when you have something, and, you know, it really bothered me during the games, so…

Q. How many hours of, like, medical treatment did you get in the last day, since it hurt you? Like what did you do to try to get on the court?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, I tried to do some treatment, you know, to get some massage to relieve the pain, but it didn’t help me a lot.

Q. Is this a recurring injury? Is this new this year?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: No, it’s new. I think it’s just coming from playing hardcourts, and I never had it before.

Q. Jelena’s been storming through this tournament. What impressed you the most about the way she played you today?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, I mean, she is a very consistent player. That’s the way she’s playing for the last few years.
It didn’t surprise me. She’s in good shape, and you can see it from the first point. I think she has a good chance to go all the way here, she likes to play on hard and she’s in good shape.

Q. What specifically though makes you think she can make a run and win the whole thing?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, I think she’s, you know, she has the whole package of the game. She’s moving well, has a good forehand, backhand. Whole game is very solid. She’s very relaxed on the court and enjoys playing. She’s a very tough opponent.

Q. Do you feel like you two almost have identical games? Neither one has a really strong serve, but you both have like wonderful baseline strokes. Is it very similar to Jelena?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: No, I don’t think we play a similar game. No, I think we play good from the baseline, but I don’t think we play similar.

In ogni colpo o solo su alcuni?

ELENA DEMENTIEVA: No, è nuovo.

Ti senti simile a Jelena?

JUSTINE HENIN

SERENA WILLIAMS b. Justine Henin 6-2, 6-0

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. How do you assess the match, Justine?
JUSTINE HENIN: Well, it’s still little bit early to talk about that, but it was a lot of intensity at the beginning of the match and it took a lot of energy. But she just has been better every part of the game, and I didn’t do enough to win and she has been consistent.
I mean, I didn’t serve well enough, I didn’t take my opportunities enough, and I felt she was on every ball, but I probably — I wasn’t moving her a lot, but it was quite difficult today.

Q. Were you surprised she was coming in a lot?
JUSTINE HENIN: Well, no. I knew she was going to be really aggressive, because the last time, last three times I beat her, so I knew she was going to go for it.
She has been — she did a good job. I mean, she’s very aggressive attacking the ball, and I think she did what she had to do, and I didn’t do what I had to do, so that makes a big difference at the end.

Q. Are you bothered by the conditions at all?
JUSTINE HENIN: Well, it was hot and windy, but it’s always in Miami, so it’s for both players. It was really hot, but that was okay.

Q. Was she any different than, you know, the last three times you had played her? Do you feel that she’s maybe playing better this year so far?
JUSTINE HENIN: Looks like she was moving much better than last year, for sure. But I have a feeling that I really didn’t do enough, you know, try to take my opportunities.
So many games I was leading and I didn’t take my chances, and, yeah, it was quite difficult.

Q. Are you worried about your form this season, maybe?
JUSTINE HENIN: Well, it’s like it’s been tough for me in the last — since the beginning of the season, but I understand why. A lot of things happen and what I did last year was pretty amazing.
Yeah, it’s not that easy, and I took the time to work hard in the last few weeks, but sometimes it’s not enough because you face players that want the same thing.
She was simply better than me, so I will have to keep working and one day will get better.

Q. Are you mentally maybe still processing everything you did last season?
JUSTINE HENIN: I mean, it’s going to be — what happened last season is far away from now, but still I knew it was going to take some time to really, you know, realize and accept everything that happened last year.
Then I’m maybe still a little bit in it, but we’ll see. I need to keep working, be focused on this moment, and we see.

Q. Can you just kind of clarify, are you setting up some sort of base in Florida, or is that just lending your name to a facility?
JUSTINE HENIN: No, I’m not going to be there that often. Carlos is going to be really involved in it. As soon as I get some time between tournaments here in the States I’ll be over there, so it’s a good thing.

Q. As the match progressed, what things did you try to do to get your backhand, recover your backhand?
JUSTINE HENIN: Yeah, probably not enough. But it was — she did put a lot of pressure, especially on my backhand side. I wasn’t solid enough, I wasn’t consistent enough, and it was too many ups and downs. That makes a big difference, because she’s been really consistent during the whole match.
She didn’t have these ups and downs, and so she did a perfect job, and I didn’t. It makes it quite a big difference.

Q. Did you try to do some different things, like putting more air under the ball?
JUSTINE HENIN: Well, it was difficult. I had the feeling that it was going very fast and that I didn’t have the time really to organize my game, and so it was — you know, it’s still very early to talk about the match and take some distance with it.
So maybe in a few hours I’ll be — I’ll understand maybe a little bit more.

Q. Is there something about when you play her here? Is there anything about this particular venue? Obviously you beat her in other places, but last year here, also. Is it just the conditions? Is it she’s close to home?
JUSTINE HENIN: Oh, I don’t know. I don’t know about that. Who knows?
She’s feeling very good here, that’s for sure. The reason I couldn’t — I couldn’t really play my game, I don’t think so.

Q. Do you feel like you were playing too defensively or she was making you play too much defense?
JUSTINE HENIN: Kind of both, but I was — yeah, I was too defensive, for sure. Against this kind of player you don’t have any chance if you play that game, and I didn’t have really any courage to do something else.
When you’re on the court it’s not that easy. Now I can say it wasn’t enough, but when you are out there and you feel the pressure, it’s not that easy.

Q. Do you remember the last time you lacked courage?
JUSTINE HENIN: Well, it’s — you know, these kind of things happen sometimes, and I need to really keep working and fight a lot, and that’s what I’m going to do.

Q. Is it because maybe you haven’t played much of your top tennis yet this year that you’re maybe playing a little bit too defensive, or like you say, lacking courage?
JUSTINE HENIN: Yeah, I mean, I missed some confidence from the beginning of the season, and that is for sure. I didn’t have the opportunity — I mean, here I played three first good matches, but I wasn’t at that level today, and it wasn’t that easy to make that difference. It’s one of the reasons.

Justien Henin: Sicuramente si muove molto meglio rispetto all’anno scorso.

Justien Henin: Era difficile.

Q. Particularly considering that your sister won earlier, is this extra disappointing?
VENUS WILLIAMS: I’m always happy for Serena to win. It would have been obviously very exciting for me to win, too, but just didn’t happen.

Q. Looked like the conditions were a little bit tough out there, Venus. I know you’re very used to playing here but it looked like the balls were sailing and wind was swirling; was that a factor?
VENUS WILLIAMS: You know, it wasn’t — it can be worse here. I was actually pretty happy with the conditions.
I definitely don’t blame any conditions on my loss.

Q. Can you talk about your performance tonight? You looked pretty frustrated out there obviously by the end.
VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah, she played well. Just felt like I stepped slow and a little bit, little bit off. I just didn’t have the answers today, and she played well.

Q. What was your coach’s advice between sets?
VENUS WILLIAMS: I don’t even remember now. Yeah, I don’t know.

Q. Did you talk to Serena after her match?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Yeah, I saw her. I told her, Good match. I was happy for her and proud of her, and she was playing the way she can play.

Q. How disappointing, not to get a chance to play her here again.
VENUS WILLIAMS: Well, I mean, when I play tournaments I want to win the tournaments, so it’s not about who I get to play. It’s about me getting the title, so that’s my ultimate goal.

Q. Venus, where do you go from here? How are you approaching clay court?
VENUS WILLIAMS: I’m going to play Amelia Island and Charleston, so I have some tennis left in the U.S.

Q. What are you planning to play in Europe before France?
VENUS WILLIAMS: Rome. In Rome.

D. Le condizioni sembravano abbastanza dure là fuori, Venus.

D. Venus, dove giocherai adesso?

VENUS WILLIAMS: Roma. A Roma.

ROGER FEDERER

ROGER FEDERER b. Jose Acasuso 7-6(5), 6-2

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. Obviously pretty good serving day, would you say?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, it’s always nice when you feel well from the beginning on your serve. Again, it was quite some wind on the court again, not as much from the side but more from the behind.
You could really serve well from one end and have to be really careful on the other end, you know, because you had a big advantage sort of in the baseline rallies. It was key for me to serve well, especially in the beginning and, you know, it was a good serving day today. I was very happy with it.

Q. Out of all the sort of outdoor hard court places you play, how do the conditions here suit you? There’s wind and the humidity. How does this rate as a place to play for you?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I was successful as a junior already back in ‘98. Winning the Orange Bowl here. Obviously the climate was a little bit different, maybe not as humid. I always struggled in the humidity when I was younger. I also struggled in the wind actually, and in America in general.
So it wasn’t a place where I made a breakthrough very easy until one day I won every tournament there was to win in America. (laughter.)
The wind started to really become sort of something I enjoyed, you know, playing in. The challenge of, you know, choosing the right tactics, as my footwork and, you know, technique are better and better.
I think I really enjoy the challenge and the humidity. I started to not to enjoy but got used to once I started to really do these tough practice sessions in the summer in Dubai for the last three years. Ever since I’ve never had a problem again in the heat.

Q. If you win this tournament, will you sort of silence those people who began to doubt you a bit after your recent setbacks and problems, or do you think you’ve done that already?
ROGER FEDERER: Umm, I don’t know. I mean, you guys are writing the stuff, and some people always talk a little bit too quickly. Some guys, you know, are nicer to me. I can’t control that.
But for me it was really a matter of getting back on tour, playing matches, and hopefully playing well. I think I did well under the circumstances I was under.
I mean, I can hardly rate really the Australian Open too much because of what I went through, you know. I can’t even tell how my game really was. Now I feel like I’m playing well. You can tell, as well, I’m moving well and playing well and serving well. That’s what it comes down to for me.
All these matches are a grind. If you look back you always probably thought I won every match 6-2, 6-3. It wasn’t like that. I had many matches I came through in a close way, and that’s what made me the best player for so long, is winning those big points over and over again.
That’s what I wasn’t able to do against Murray and wasn’t able to do against Djokovic, and you’ll always get matches like this. Then right away it looks like you’re not on top of your game. A lot of those matches I just couldn’t pull it off.

Q. There’s going to be a three-set final this year. How do you feel about that? There are mixed reviews.
ROGER FEDERER: This is a subject to talk about, you know. Because I’m a fan of the best-of-five-set finals. But then if you look at the long run of every tournament, we’ve had many problems throughout the last few seasons where we play a five setter here and guys then pull out the next week.
It’s happened especially in back-to-back tournaments in Rome and Hamburg, maybe Toronto and Cincinnati before where they didn’t always have five-set finals. But another tournament gets hurt under those circumstances.
I understand for the live audience it’s not good. For us, the players, we’d also like to play five sets. But if you have to back it up with tournament after tournament, it is better for the players and for other tournaments if you have the best-of-three finals.
So there’s good and bad in this story, and I think it’s fair that every tournament of the Masters Series level has the same format in terms of how the finals should be played. They’re best-of-three unfortunately, and that’s the way we have to play it here in Miami, as well.

Q. You may have Andy Roddick again in the next round. Are you ever wondering the law of averages will catch up to you with him?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, he’s beaten me before, but I have a definitely a very, very good record against him. Toughest places to play against him is always in America. I’ve had some close ones here with him over the years.
A guy I always enjoy playing against, we have a lot of respect for each other. I think it will be a great matchup for this tournament if he were to play in the next round.

Q. When you had mono, did you ever think of Mario Ancic and the fact he missed like six months?
ROGER FEDERER: For some reason I didn’t think of him, no, because it was over before it started for me. I heard I had it, and two weeks later they said it was gone.

Q. Did it surprise you it was so short?
ROGER FEDERER: No, because it can be over very quickly. Apparently I already had it back in 2006, hints of it, but…
Yeah, so it’s in the past.

Q. Ovviamente hai servito bene oggi, non ti pare?
RF: Si, è sempre bello trovarsi bene col servizio fin dall’inizio. Era essenziale per me servire bene, specialmente all’inizio, ed ho servito bene oggi.

Abbiamo avuto partite tirate qui in passato. Mi fa sempre piacere giocargli contro, ci rispettiamo molto.

RF: No, perchè può passare davvero in fretta. A quanto pare l’avevo già avuta nel 2006, o perlomeno i sintomi…Ma ormai è acqua passata.

Q. Yes. How do you feel about making the fourth round and your match tomorrow night?
ANDY RODDICK: I feel good. You know, I still feel like I could probably hit the ball a little bit better, but it was pretty windy out there and the conditions weren’t easy.
You know, whenever you play someone who’s won I think five matches in seven or eight days, whatever it is, including quallies, he’s got to be hitting the ball well.
I said the other day that that doesn’t happen by accident. So I knew it was going to be tough. He plays pretty high risk, and a lot of times there’s not a lot you can do besides let him take his swings and hope eventually he might punch himself out.

Q. Why did the second set look so much different than the first? Was there some kind of pattern that you cracked?
ANDY RODDICK: I started serving a little better. I didn’t serve well again, which I’m going to have to fix. I felt I was solid all around. If he was going to win points it was maybe six or seven shots as opposed to two or three and over the course of a set that makes a difference.

Q. How much do you know about Benneteau?
ANDY RODDICK: I know a lot. I forget how many times — I think we played three times as pros. Yeah, three times, and I think I lost the last time. We’re similar in age, so I’ve seen him since juniors.

Q. At what point when the draws were published and everything did you notice that you and Federer are kind of on a path for each other in the quarterfinals?
ANDY RODDICK: I mean, I don’t know. I wasn’t really looking for it. Probably about the same time you saw that the draw was out.
You look at it, but it’s irrelevant. I’m not playing Roger Federer. I’m playing Julien Benneteau. If that match comes to fruition, then we’ll talk about it then.

Q. You’re a fan of all sports. Do you think tennis belongs in the Olympics?
ANDY RODDICK: Umm, yeah, I think so. You know, it’s just — it’s just unique, because I don’t think any other sport plays 11 months a year and all of a sudden every fourth year has to put the biggest sporting event in the world smack dab in their season.
So I think if you’re going to have the Olympics you have to make some adjustments. I don’t know if you can fit four pounds of dirt into a three-pound bag.
You know, so I think the — playing tennis at the Olympics is a great thing. It’s just we have a full schedule on a nonOlympic year, so when it is an Olympic year, you know, and you do have to make a 20-, 24-hour trip, it is tough.
You know, I’m watching Sports Center last week and I’m getting a chuckle because I see where they’re debating whether the Red Sox or the As are going to have jet lag and that’s going to affect them six months down in the season.
I said, You’ve got to be kidding me. We do that three weeks in a row. But it is pretty extreme. Unfortunately this year I had to make a decision.

Q. Do you get the sense most of the top players are excited about the Olympics, it’s something they really want to do?
ANDY RODDICK: Sure. And being at the Olympics was an honor in ‘04, and I’m really glad that I got to experience it, and really glad that I went. It’s one of the neatest things that I’ve done.
That being said, maybe let one of the other guys have the experience. At this point in my career I’d like to put another major on the board, and that’s my focus.

Q. Was it a tough decision for you?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, it was extremely difficult, yeah.

Q. You talked just now about wanting to bring the attention away from maybe your love life and back to tennis. How much can you do toward that this week?
ANDY RODDICK: Well, I don’t know if me winning here would bring up my love life more or if I lost and disappeared for a couple of weeks I wouldn’t have to talk. It’s kind of maybe a little bit of a Catch-22, but it is what it is. I’m here this week to play a tennis tournament

. Q. They’re not going to have a five-set final here anymore. How do you feel about that?
ANDY RODDICK: I like that, just because I feel like if you start a tournament one way you should finish it one way.
I feel like a three-out-of-five set tournament is a totally different beast than a two out of three set. So it’s almost changing the dynamic. If someone’s hot and then all of a sudden — it’s a different dynamic, and I think it should be consistent across the board, so I like it.

Q. Although you’re not playing the Olympics because of your concern for the US Open, you’re probably aware some athletes feel very uncomfortable playing in China because of the human rights issue. I just want to know, is that part of the factor, or was that any consideration at all for you?
ANDY RODDICK: No. That wasn’t — that wasn’t a factor in my decision at all. It was purely from a tennis standpoint.

Andy Roddick: Sto bene.

Andy Roddick: Ho cominciato a servire meglio. Mi sentivo sicuro, in generale.

Andy Roddick: No, non l’ho proprio preso in considerazione. C’entra solo il tennis.

LINDSAY DAVENPORT

Q. Things didn’t go so well today?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: You know, not really. You know, this is the first match that I just really felt like I couldn’t figure out a way to kind of get back into it. You know, it was obviously windy today and hasn’t been windy the rest of the tournament.
Just didn’t — you know, she did everything better than I did. She served really well. She got a lot of balls back and played very smart.
You know, I was just kind of fighting the wind, trying to find my shots. But she played well. I mean, I thought she served really, really well. I didn’t get a lot of great chances to return.
I think the wind kind of affected my serve, and she took advantage of that.

Q. You’ve played an awful lot of matches against great players, so this is probably a silly question, but did you feel any sort of shock, letdown after going home last night and saying, yeah, I beat Ivanovic?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: No, I think I’m pretty good at that. I think I came up against a player today that was real intense and real eager to win. Obviously everyone plays out there on court 1, but it’s so small between where the fence is and the baseline is compared to like a Stadium Court or a Grandstand Court.
I felt there wasn’t a lot of room out there. I know the dimensions are the same and all of that stuff, but it really felt kind of tight quarters.
Having said that, I think she really played well and took advantage of that.

Q. Coming into this tournament, what were you kind of thinking? You know, after yesterday people were saying, Lindsay, maybe you have a shot here to win. What were you thinking?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, I mean, that’s the thing with tennis. Every day you start over no matter who you play and the players have obviously there’s much more depth.
But the way I played yesterday I was a legitimate, I don’t know about contender, but a legitimate threat. Then today didn’t play as well and ran into a girl that played very well.
But, you know, I don’t really know what my expectations were coming here. You know, obviously I played well. I’m disappointed to go out today. I felt like yesterday I had, you know, obviously played great tennis, had opened up the draw up a little bit, and wasn’t able to take advantage of that.
But, you know, hopefully more positives than negatives come from this tournament.

Q. Despite losing today, do you feel like yesterday’s win over Ana was kind of a notch on your belt in your comeback?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: Well, of course. Any time you get a great win over a great player it’s a positive thing. The disappointment comes from not following that up, something I’ve had a lot of pride in over the years of not kind of resting on my laurels and getting back out there.
Just didn’t happen today. But overall, I mean, I don’t know if she’s 2 or 3 or 4 in the world, whatever ranked player she is, is a big win. And the great thing about tennis is there’s another tournament next week and about 10 more this year, so it’s not like I have no more chances for the year.

Q. Grass is a surface which invariably challenges a lot of the more younger inexperienced players. Do you feel comfortable going in? Are you looking forward going back to Wimbledon?
LINDSAY DAVENPORT: I am. I love grass. I think anyone in the beginning of their career it’s tough to figure out, but after the first few years playing at Wimbledon I really seem to get a newfound respect for it and learned how to play on it.
So, yeah, I haven’t been back there since I lost in the finals in ‘05, so I’m excited about going back and giving it another chance. But most importantly, just being there again and getting to play in the most historical tournament that we have.
So, yeah, I’m very much looking forward to that. We have, I don’t know, three months or so. Got a little ways to go before then.

L.Davenport: No, non proprio.

L.Davenport: Si, mi trovo bene, Amo l’erba.
Mancano, non so, 3- 4 mesi.

No!

Occorre ritrovare istinto e naturalezza.

Lascia dunque Miami “caricata a palla”? Continua?

Si vedrà man mano.

ANA IVANOVIC
LINDSAY DAVENPORT b. Ana Ivanovic 64 62

Q. You had never played Lindsay before. Was that a factor in what happened today? Did she do things that surprised you?
ANA IVANOVIC: It was a little bit. Obviously, first time you play against someone you try to, you know, get to know them and try to get rhythm in the beginning.
But against her you just don’t get it. She was playing extremely well. She had always the first hit on her ball. It was kind of disappointing for me.
I had chances in the beginning and didn’t use them. Just my intensity wasn’t up there today. When you play against such a champion, you need to be on the ball for each point.

Q. What about your fatigue after Indian Wells? Is that still a factor?
ANA IVANOVIC: Well, honestly, it’s a little bit hard, you know, to start from the first round and bring the intensity back. I started with my intensity a little bit today. But, you know, she’s just a great player. Today on the court she was the better one. You know, she deserved to win.
My service wasn’t going so well, and I had quite a few unforced errors. Yeah, like I said, she was the better player today, and I hope we get a chance to play again.

Q. Does it give you an appreciation of how difficult it is for the really tennis players like Federer, say, to do it back-to-back, given your experience in the last week?
ANA IVANOVIC: It is. It is. I start admiring them more and more for that. Because, obviously, it’s not easy, and they most of the time do it week after week.
It’s also important to make a smart scheduling and don’t play too many tournaments in a row, because you just can’t keep the level through many weeks. So that’s something, you know, I’m experiencing for one of the first times. Definitely I learn from this, and it was a good achievement still.
You know, I was pretty happy with last week. And this week, like I said, she was the better player today.

Q. I have a question about Lindsay. Watching her, she took time out to start a family. All the time it takes to come back and playing well and what she did today. Do you kind of look at her and say, As a woman, I can have that kind of balance in my life? I can have children. I can still be a tennis champion.
ANA IVANOVIC: Obviously, yes. You know, it’s quite individual. So it just shows her passion for tennis and her love for tennis, so it’s great to see that. But, you know, like I said, it’s very individual. You have to try to find what works best for you. You know, if you can find balance between your private life and tennis, you know.
You have to find some kind of balance, because if you are just into tennis, you know, what’s happening here, sometimes it gets too much. You also have to have some time away from it and enjoy.

Q. If you didn’t know Lindsay was ranked 33 based on her performance today, what would you have guessed her ranking would be?
ANA IVANOVIC: She played like a top 10 player easily today. She won Grand Slams before, and she was the No. 1 player. So she has the game. Today she played very well. So, you know, I’m glad to see her back, and I hope she can do well.

Q. Kind of a strange schedule today. Had Justine and Venus and you, all on Grandstand and Court 1. How did you feel out there in that environment?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I haven’t played on Grandstand in years. However, I did play on Court 1 or 2 last year. You know, it’s a good environment. You see a lot more kids out there.
I remember when I came to this tournament probably four, five years ago when I was younger, you know, watching. I remember watching like Gabrielle Sabatini, (laughing) and it was always on Grandstand.
It was just a great experience. So it’s good sometimes, I think, to get the top players out there and have all the kids be able to get so close and so up tight. Do I like playing on the Grandstand? Obviously I prefer playing on Center. But at the same time, I always try to look at the glass being half full. It’s a great opportunity.

Q. You don’t think that affects you, the surroundings being a little different?
SERENA WILLIAMS: It was cool. The crowd was really into it. You know, it was good. It was a good vibe.

Q. Four years ago that was, you said?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, you know, I was like 14 or 13, whatever. It might have been five. It might have been five years ago.

Q. What turned things around for you?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I really just started fighting. I didn’t want to lose. I talked to my mom on the phone. You know, she has a way of talking to me. And I talked to my dad as well.
They pretty much both said the same thing. You know, mom was just like you need to do this, blah, blah, blah. And I was like, okay. Are you listening? Yes, I’m listening.

Q. Is there one of them, your mom or your dad, that you sort of would prefer to talk to in a situation like that after the way that first set went, or equally the same temperament?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Well, my dad is so positive. And like I could be hitting a thousand errors and he’ll be like, You’re playing great. You know, all you have to do is this. Whereas my mom is more, You need to do this.
But she’s just more — I don’t know. Everyone probably thinks it’s opposite, but it’s really not. But my mom’s like more strict and tougher, but it’s good. You know, you need that one person to be tough on you, and you need the one person to be, you know, you can go to them like oh, and really feel sorry for you.
So I think they kind of work really well with each other.

Q. What was happening? What did you find that you weren’t doing?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I was making — I went out there after the rain delay and I saw I had 44 unforced errors. I really had cut down on my errors in the last tournament, and even in my first round match. I just made too many errors. I haven’t made 44 errors in the beginning of a second set in a while, and that’s really what happened. I just made 44 errors.
I don’t know what the final stat was, but that’s a lot of errors to make in a match.

Q. I think it was 60.
SERENA WILLIAMS: See, that’s incredible.

Serena Williams: E’ andata benone.

D. Hai detto, quattro anni fa?
Serena Williams: Sì, sai, avevo forse 13 o 14 anni, insomma, potrebbero esserci stati cinque. Potrebbe esser stato cinque anni fa. ( Serena Williams compie quest’anno 27 anni, ndt).

Serena Williams: Ho veramente iniziato a combattere. Non volevo perdere. Ho parlato con mia madre al telefono. Sai, ha un modo particolare di parlarmi. E ho parlato anche con mio padre. Hanno detto entrambi le stesse cose. Sai, mia madre diceva “devi fare questo, bla, bla. E io, “okay”.

Serena Williams: Beh, mio padre è molto positivo.

D. Cosa stava succedendo in campo?

D. Credo siano stati 60.
Serena Williams: Appunto, è incredibile.

An interview with/Intervista a:

ROGER FEDERER

ROGER FEDERER b. Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-4

Q. You looked a lot more aggressive tonight than recently. Did you feel that way?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I tried to play an aggressive way, you know. I couldn’t really chip and charge what I was trying to do because I think he’s really improved his second serve. But other than that, he gives you always a chance from the baseline if you play aggressive enough to come in.
I’m really volleying well in the last few weeks, so I think that again showed today. And as I was winning points, I kept doing it.

Q. Did you feel you played really well? It looked like you were.
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I think I did. I played well on the big points. He missed his first serve twice on my breakpoints. So I really played two good points to break him there. And then times he had break points and many times he served well as well and stayed aggressive.
He played far back, and I think I got lucky on one, it was a net cord, I think. But all in all I really think I played a very good match tonight.

Q. It looked like you handled that pretty easily. Did he maybe challenge you more than it looks like from the outside?
ROGER FEDERER: Even if he comes back a break in the second, you know, we’re still on even terms, so I always had the lead. It’s easy to play that way, but I think the important thing was don’t get in too much trouble, you know, on my serve early on in the sets, so I don’t fall behind like what happened against Mardy, for instance, at Indian Wells.
I think I really served well when I had to tonight. I think it really came down to the big points. Those are the ones I had to win and did, so I’m very pleased.

Q. Apart from at Wimbledon, I’ve never seen you in the fore court quite so often. What was your plan in coming to the net quite so frequently?
ROGER FEDERER: I just answered, but it was just a tactic of me trying to come in. He plays in a way just sort of push your tennis; he waits for an error. You’ve got to take a little bit of a chance to come in, because the court is very slow here. So if you don’t come in on a good ball, he’ll always get a decent passing shot.
So if you can keep coming in and winning points on that, he’ll start to change his game from the baseline, which he had to do to make more errors, and that’s exactly what I wanted to force out of him.

Q. In Indian Wells you said you like to play against French players because you can enjoy a lot of variety. Is this what you feel today?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, the Frenchmen are always great shotmakers. You know, sound techniques and they learn the game in a similar fashion like the Germans do or the Swiss do, the Italians do. We grow up on clay.
In the winter times we play on hard court, so it’s pretty similar most of the times. You know, they always have good coaching and everything. So, because of that, they become good players. Look at the amount of players they have in the top 100. It’s quite amazing all the time. And even in juniors, you know, the French were always one of the best, if not the best. So it was nice playing against them again.

Q. Did the match today indicate anything to you about your health, where you’re at as far as that goes?
ROGER FEDERER: Oh, honestly I’m not concerned about that anymore. I can always answer questions. But I think for me the proof, I don’t know, came at Indian Wells. When I played well, I backed up match after match. You know, felt good also after the matches, before the matches.
In Dubai it was still a little bit in the air. I was sort of anxious to see how it goes. It was a three setter. But I also didn’t have any problems there. But I’m definitely more match tough and more fit now again, and I think it shows on the court.

Q. Did you get a chance to see any of Djokovic’s match yesterday against Anderson? And if so, were you shocked by what you saw?
ROGER FEDERER: I only saw a little bit on the bad TV in the locker rooms, you know. We missed the good TV coverage in our locker room anyway. But I practiced with Anderson the day before.
I thought if he maybe plays well he’s got maybe a small chance, you know. But he played great and beat him. So it was a good performance by him.

Q. Did you give him any tips on how to play Novak?
ROGER FEDERER: Not really. Did it all by himself.

RF: Si, ho giocato bene, specialmente i punti importanti.

Q. Gli hai dato qualche consiglio su come giocare contro Novak?
RF: No. Ha fatto tutto da solo.
