Q. You took off your cap, and then you pulled three aces out of your hat. How did you do that?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: It was like I pull out three aces from the sleeve, right?

Q. Yeah.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, yeah, I lost habit playing with the hat but I needed to because of the heat, is really big, so I had to I had to protect myself from the sun, but, you know, that was a crucial moment and it was the turning point in the whole match. If I didn’t come up with the three aces, it could go either way.

Q. What happened in the second set, Novak? What was the struggle?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, I was break up, and then I was 5 3, Love 30, he served out good, but anyhow, I should have used my opportunities. And I knew before the match that he is a big server and he’s going to go for the shots and I just need to calm down, be patient and wait for my chances, which I did well in the first set and start of the second, but then suddenly I was nervous in the moments when I needed to keep my focus and calm down, and of course the result was unforced errors which would be crucial for me throughout the match.

Q. How does it feel when you’ve won the first Grand Slam of the year, now you’ve won the first Masters of the year. Pretty impressive start. Why do you think it’s suddenly coming together for you?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: It’s a big run. Well, obviously I’m getting all things together, and I started believing in myself much more than I used to last year. You know, when you start winning the major events, you obviously have proved to yourself in the first place to everybody else that you have quality to be there at the top, and it’s just a matter of mental ability and mental strength.
I worked on that, you know, throughout these two years, and I think I gained that with experience. But on the other hand, I know that to be here and to make such a great achievements, you need to work hard and that’s what I’m doing. So I hope I hope I can keep the momentum going.

Q. If someone had told you when you and Ivanovic were practicing together as kids that you would win back to back titles of this size on the same day, what would you say?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: You’re joking with me. (laughter.) That’s what I would say, probably.
Well, this is something I think that we absolutely deserve, you know. We’ve been working very hard to throw out all of our lives, and this is just a crown for our work, and it’s paying off.

Q. Should we name it maybe Serbian Wells now?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Yeah. (laughter.)

Q. What does all this success do for your country?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: It does a lot. You know, I think professional athletes all over the world represent their country, are one of the biggest ambassadors of their country, and, of course, considering the fact that our country is in very difficult position, they’re struggling economically, in economics and in politics, as well, but this is something that I don’t want to get involved in, and I just, from my side, try to help my country as much as I can.

Q. Apparently you won first two major tournaments of the year, and we’ve got players like Mardy Fish and Tsonga beating Federer and Nadal. Do you think there’s more equality in the top 10 now or even in the top 20 as far as players go?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: I think so. There is more variety of players at the top, which is encouraging thing for this sport. Obviously a lot of people, if I can say like that, got a little bit bored, Federer and Nadal winning and being so dominant throughout couple of years already.
It’s always good to see some new faces winning major events, and I think the people like it. And, yeah, the best thing is that all these new faces are young, young players, so hopefully you can see a lot of them in the future.

Q. You don’t think people are tired of you winning everything early?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: I’ll try to be interesting for people (laughter.)

Q. Would you be kind to tell us little bit more about the tennis center that your family is building in the heart of your country and the city of Kragujevac, please?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Yes. We have finally, after many years of trying, we have good news now. We have license to build up two tennis complex, two tennis centers, one in Belgrade and one in Kragujevac, as you mentioned.
We’re trying to create a family business in the firsthand, and the other hand try to help all the kids that really wanted to improve and to develop into the professional tennis players.
As I was saying before, Serbia doesn’t have still a tennis center, national tennis center, and it’s very much needed, considering the results that we are making. So I think we deserve it and we’re going to try to help those kids.

Q. As has been mentioned, you’ve had this great start. In your own mind, do you think you’re the best player in the world now?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, I’m still not thinking that direction. I’m aware of the fact that people started talking about that, and looking at me as best player in the world this moment, which of course looking at the results I think I deserve to be, but again, I don’t want to think in that direction, because it creates an extra pressure, and I have enough of the pressure and expectations behind my back.
I just want to think towards the continuation of the season, and I know that there’s still a long way to the end of the year, and I’m coming closer, though, to the second place of the world, and people started talking about it three players instead of two now, which is encouraging thing and great thing for me. But I’m still not thinking of myself as the best player in the world.

Q. You said that you don’t want to get, I guess, pulled into the political situation at home, but you gave that video speech last month and also, I guess, what happened the last couple of days ago with Milorad Cavic and getting banned from the swimming championship.
Were there any repercussions from the speech that you gave that maybe made you hesitant, and is there any sort of attention that athletes have to go through?

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: No, I still haven’t got any negative comments on that. Of course, my life is tennis, my life is sport. This is my job.
This is what I do, and this is what I try to keep focused on. I know that the people obviously look at me as a very successful athlete and the man who can bring up a lot of positive energy to their country.
This is what I do, but as I said before, I’m not trying to get involved in politics, and this is period. This is the final sentence from me. And even though I’m young, I gave that speech, because I felt in that moment very bad and very disappointed in what’s going on in our country, and the people who know my past and they understand what I’m saying, my father and my aunt, my uncle, they all grew up there, they were born in Kosovo, and my family used to live there for 30 years. I was there many times. So it kind of touched me in that moment that this was my quest to give support to my country.

Come hai fatto?

Partenza abbastanza clamorosa.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Mi stai prendendo in giro. (risata) Quello avrei detto, probabilmente.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Significa molto.

Q. You have restored yourself. Have you been planning or thinking about this and wondering what has happened to your game and how you could restore yourself?
MARDY FISH: Yeah, sure. Obviously, you know, with some results that came early in my career and wanting to, you know, stick with those and improve on those, you know, with the injuries and, you know, just bad game plans or not sticking with the game plan I need to stick with, it was definitely gratifying to know that I had some, you know, some tough times at the end of last year, in the summer of last year, and, you know, during grass court season, stuff like that, and I just I was, you know, playing injured and trying to get through it, and wondering when I was going to get healthy again, feel better again, and, you know, that’s come this entire year, and, you know, hopefully it will continue.

Q. Does Djokovic have the tools to be No. 1 at some place soon?
MARDY FISH: Absolutely. I think the results speak for itself. He’s got all the weapons. He doesn’t have any weaknesses. He’s extremely competitive, which is obviously a loose term, loosely thrown out term in sports.
He’s very competitive. I mean, there are different levels, and he’s on the top levels of those. He wants to win badly, and he’s got game, for sure.

Q. Who do you think the best tennis player in the world is now?
MARDY FISH: I think it’s Roger Federer, hands down. He’s he’s, you know, he hasn’t shown anything, you know, to say otherwise. He’s got, you know, few results these past these few weeks that, you know, are uncharacteristic for him last year to build on, and, you know, I think he’s going to continue to be No. 1 for a long time.

Q. When you came in here yesterday, you said you hadn’t realized what had happened yet. When did you, and what was that like?
MARDY FISH: More like this morning at about 4:00 a.m. when I couldn’t go back to sleep, you know, kind of realizing, you know, what I was about to embark on and what I was about to, you know, try to do and try to, you know, try to win this tournament.
I think I came in here a few rounds ago and someone said, Are you ready to fathom the fact that you could win this tournament? It just seems so long ago. It was like I think it was maybe my quarterfinal match or even before, right after I was going into the quarterfinals, maybe. And it was like, Jeez, I can’t even fathom that. I’ve got a lot of guys to go through and a lot of great players to go through and I was one set away. It is what it is.

Q. Have you ever felt crowd support quite like you did today?
MARDY FISH: Outside of Davis Cup, no, not even close. It was it was fun, for sure. It almost felt like a basketball game, you know. It was amazing an atmosphere, amazing feeling, something I’ll never forget.

Q. Did it affect the way you played at all?
MARDY FISH: Absolutely. They definitely pulled me through. You know, I don’t win the Nalbandian match if it’s in Argentina, that’s for sure. That same court, same surface, same stadium, different fans, I don’t win that match.
They pulled me through that one, and, you know, they were on my side when I played Roger. Definitely today felt great.

Q. So many people feel technology is flawless. My question is two parts: Do you think Hawk Eye is accurate, and do you think it puts, the system puts too much pressure on the players to make instant calls on?
MARDY FISH: I do think it’s accurate. I think that’s I think that’s a pretty good thing to think, if you’re out there, you’ve got to believe that it’s right.
I know I had one out there today that I must have missed the mark, because it was there was a mark that was long, and it showed it in. I definitely missed the mark, because the mark I thought definitely didn’t show on the board. I do think it’s 100 percent accurate.
I don’t think that we think about it too much. I think if anything, it gives us peace of mind to know we’re not going to lose on something. We don’t have to worry about, you know, the human error aspect of it.
But the umpires are you know, you can tell. We put a lot of points out there and it rarely happens. We hit a lot of balls close to the line. It doesn’t happen too often.

Q. Third set, at what point did you feel like the momentum started switching? At what point did it feel like he regained the momentum?
MARDY FISH: I think it was that first game was huge for him to get back and win that game. Obviously I’m still, you know, still 0 1 and I’m serving.
But if I could have gotten that game, he came out a little lax in the first game, missed a couple easy shots he doesn’t usually miss.
I felt like the momentum was on my side, crowd was getting into it big time. You could kind of sense there was a little spot there I could take control of the match. And even though I didn’t really feel like I had control the entire time, even though I did win that second set, you know, I was serving sporadically and serving over the baseline sometimes, and just didn’t really know what I was doing on the serve and trying I was just thinking about trying to get that back, getting my rhythm back on that.
It obviously would have been awesome to get that first game and go out there with a lot of confidence and definitely a lot of momentum.

Q. Ti sei ritrovato.

An interview with/Intervista a:

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA

ANA IVANOVIC b. Svetlana Kuznetsova 6 4, 6 3

Q. Can you tell us your evaluation of how the match went today?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Well, I think she played incredibly well in the first set. Every important ball she hit winner on the line. It was line on the line, on the line.
Like I had some opportunities. I had one break point then and she played well. She served very good serves in.
I mean, I was not serving great, but she did me one break and I was too close to the break. She had outstanding first set. It’s no words. She played better.
But for second set, I felt like more pressure because I had to go for it a little bit more, and she broke me twice. She was serving so much better. For her it was so much easier to win games on her serve than I did on mine.
But I think I’ve been just not so great, I should be playing good against her. I played a little bit too much to her forehand.

Q. This is your third final this year. Did you approach this any different than the other finals?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: I mean, every final you come another player also plays. I had different and better chances, like against Justine. Still it was amazing final. She just played better in the end, but it is great match.
Against Jelena I had chances. I use my opportunities. But today, I didn’t have that many chances. She just played better, I think.

Q. Was that painful for you, Svetlana?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Yeah, definitely. It’s always painful to lose, but I prefer to get to the final losing than to lose in second round. I still played pretty good tournament, though.

Q. Do you think you’re a different player in these finals than you are in the earlier rounds?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: It’s not that it’s finals, it’s just she played better than me. That’s it. It’s not about how many finals I win or loss. She played better. It’s different.

Q. Can you talk about the fans? I guess a couple of times they were making some noise.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: I don’t make any comments, okay? I’m not even thinking about going to that level.

Q. People are always asking you, it seems, about how you play in the finals. Does that seem a bit strange to you since you won seven tournaments last year?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: I won nine, no?

Q. Was it nine?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: That’s different. At least two more finals I won, you know, I didn’t lose.
Well, no, I know you guys, you have to have something to write about. Normally you don’t write sorry to say that normally you don’t write about positive things. You try to find something interesting for people.
I guess trying to find something about me losing finals, but that’s okay. I’m not going to go down on myself, you know. She played better. I have to improve some movements. That’s it. I’m just going to face next tournament better I can, and try to get to the final.
When I get to the final, I’m going to face it again. I’m going to do my best out there and let’s see if I can make it. I’m not going to get down on myself. But you can ask whatever you want, guys.

Q. Looked like you almost turned it around because you break back and then hold. Seemed like everyone was thinking maybe you were back in the match. Momentum seemed to go back and you went back quickly.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: There, I lost it, made a little mistake. I gave it a little bit to her, because I felt like I had pressure on me all the time. She wasn’t giving me any free points and she was attacking. It was, like, you feel like it’s her day, like it’s goes everything her way.
I was trying to stay calm and play every ball. Doesn’t matter what, many things been disturbing me. But still, I was trying to be there and play every point, and she just played better today, you know.
I would like to see her play when it’s not her day, you know. To figure out some different ways to win. That’s how I did today. I couldn’t find a way, but it wasn’t my great day of playing, either.

Q. Is there a particular point when you get a sense, this is starting to get away, when the pressure starts to build?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Well, you know, in the first set it was like quick moment 1, 2, you know? First games I was like holding my serve but tough, and she was holding so easy. Then I had opportunities to have Love 30. One game I didn’t play so good. And then advantage on her serve, and she played so unbelievable, like she served so well.
First of all, I have to read better her serve. Then in second set, where she broke me second time, it was pretty bad, though.

Q. Svetlana, Radwanska, who you beat in the quarterfinals, told me it was very different Svetlana this tournament than at Australian Open when she beat you. That means you progress. Do you think you can do better in Miami?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: I can do better definitely. There is always room to improve, for sure. I was so different than when I played her in Australian Open. I lost little bit myself there during the tournament.

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Non faccio commenti.

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Ne ho vinti nove, no?

Q. Erano nove?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: E’ diverso.

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Posso fare meglio indubbiamente.

Q. Very confident victory, and in the final match, as well. You probably can tell us how many winners you hit down the line, but as well what does this win and the championship mean to you and for the future of your game and this season?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, it’s great victory for me. We always have tough matches. You know, usually our previous matches we both started nervous and it was always either side the first set.
But today I think we both played good tennis from first point on, so that was I was really happy with that. We both kept level. When I managed to break her on 4 All it gave me confidence, and, yeah, went strong from that point on.
Because that game I stepped up a little bit more, and I realized that’s what I got to do. I’m happy I managed to do that later.

Q. This is the first time you’ve come into a big tournament, Tier 1 as the top seed with pressure, and you came through. Can you talk about that process and how it feels?
ANA IVANOVIC: Obviously I was a little bit nervous coming into this tournament because it hasn’t happened that many times. It’s such a strong field and still I’m No. 1 seeded. Obviously more pressure comes into the play.
The first few matches I was more nervous, but then I just started to focus on each match and not even think about who I play against, just to do what I have been doing in practice. I’ve been practicing really well and working hard on my fitness. That’s something I tried to focus on when I was on the court.
So thinking technically what I got to do and as the tournament was going on and on, I played better. So I was really happy about that.

Q. You always mention how Monica Seles was your idol and you watched her as a young kid. It seems that the biggest similarity between you and her is that mental toughness that you have. Like in the eighth game of the first set you had those unforced errors and you then you came back roaring with like three points. Do you think about that at all, or that toughness comes naturally to you.
ANA IVANOVIC: I’m a big fighter and I hate to lose. I think that also comes into play. I felt I was doing much better as I progressed here was that I kept my composure so I didn’t get upset about some mistakes that I would usually get upset about.
So just try to do it next time better. In that game on 4 All, the first return I had chance, and I really made a big error. But then the very next point I went for it again, and it was a good shot.
Because I practiced that well. And I felt comfortable about it. I just had to take a risk and I had to be aggressive and it paid off today.

Q. Svetlana talked about at some point in the match she felt like the pressure was starting to build and maybe she lost a little bit of her confidence. From the other side of the net, can you tell when an opponent is starting to lose it a little bit or maybe there is a slippage of confidence that you can jump on?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah, definitely. You can tell, but you have to be also, you know, sharp and know when to look and where to look. It’s obvious you can tell by their body language, shoulders get down, they’re not so comfortable, they’re not confident, so you have to try to use that opportunity. Go for your shots, but still not overpower.
So in that game on 3 All, I noticed she was in second set I noticed she was little bit struggling with her forehands. I tried to keep my composure and to technically play as I should. Yeah, I managed to win that game. I think that was really, really important moment.

Q. What would be more important for you to win this year, the Wimbledon or the Olympics?
ANA IVANOVIC: Oh, it’s hard question. Can I have both? (laughter.)
Yeah, I mean, they’re both very special. Obviously Wimbledon, it’s very traditional and I feel my game can fit very well grass if I keep working on my volleys like I’ve been doing. But on the other hand, the Olympics are very special, and you have opportunity to play them once in four years.
So it would be really special to win a medal.

Q. It was very sporting of you to apologize for the fans who cried out in the middle of points. But how does it affect you on the court when something like that happens?
ANA IVANOVIC: It does. People don’t understand, but it affects both players, I think. You know, I really I really wanted to apologize, because it’s not my fault. But then at the other hand, they’re just very excited. They had basketball that was really popular and football and they are allowed to scream during the game, so, you know, they just need some more time to get used to in tennis you have to be quiet in between serves.
But, you know, they are just they’re also learning, and I think they’re doing a good job.

Q. You said you don’t know too much about the politics, but you know history, and the history between Russia and Serbia was always good. Maybe great. Isn’t it difficult for you to beat your close friend Svetlana from Russia, who was always friendly to Serbia?
ANA IVANOVIC: When we are on the court we are all enemies and opponents. Obviously, no, it’s hard to play against people you know well and friends. But then on the other hand, the best thing you can do is not focus on that and play like you have to play against anyone. I’m sure she also wanted to beat me today, so it’s both sides.

Q. You talk a lot about keeping your emotions in control on court, and even though you have a good disposition, looks likes sometimes you’re fighting with yourself to keep emotions in check. When you win the tournament you let out this squeal, this squeak that pierces everyone’s eardrums. Can you just talk about the moment of winning, what it feels like and everything coming out then?
ANA IVANOVIC: Yeah. I try during obviously during the match to keep it inside and to control it, you know. Even if I’m angry or when I’m positive sometimes I do little squeak, squeaky, but it just happens.
You know, I don’t try to do it or I don’t try to control it. Obviously I’m just very happy, especially when it’s when I play a good point like I did against Jankovic, the match point, and today with both winners.
It was a lot of emotion and tension built up inside, so it was just sort of moment of happiness and, yeah, just happiness.

ANA IVANOVIC: Quando siamo in campo siamo tutti nemici e avversari.

MARDY FISH

MARDY FISH b. Roger Federer 6 3, 6 2

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. Congratulation, Mardy. Could you have played much better today?
MARDY FISH: Yeah, just, I don’t know. I got a text message from somebody close to me that just said, 3 and 1 would have been better, but 3 and 2 works. Obviously he was joking.
You know, this wasn’t obviously Roger’s best day, but hopefully I had a little something to do with that. You know, I put the pressure extremely, from the word go, you know, on him, and you know, I wanted to start out - sometimes in big situations or against guys who return real well - and I consider him the best returner in the world - that I’ll tend to receive - I want to toss, tend to receive, and just to kind of get my feet under me.
I said, What the hell. Let’s go for it and let’s start it off and try and jump start him as best I can. Obviously it was a dream start to go up 3 Love and have a couple break points there at 3 0. He had a break point against my second serve game when I was 2 0. That was a huge game to get through that.

Q. Roger made that point in here before. He said, look, I don’t care what the guy’s ranking is. He’s been in the top 20. We know he can play. In terms of your game, a match like today, does this make you think maybe you’re at an even better level than you’ve ever been before?
MARDY FISH: Possibly. I’ve always thought I’ve had the capability of getting in the top 10, and that’s always you know, that’s always been the goal, is to try to get into the top 10 and, you know, be one of those players that, you know, the hunted.
I’ve always been the hunter almost my whole career, and you know, I’m capable of I felt like I was always capable of beating everybody, but it was always here and there. It was always sporadically.
Putting together these wins this week, you know, gives me a heck of a lot of confidence to know that I can beat three guys in the top 10 so far, and, you know, hopefully one more to go.

Q. When Roger has his occasional defeat, most of the players who have beaten him say it’s just a matter of believing. Most people go out and don’t believe.
MARDY FISH: Uh huh.

Q. Did you believe today?
MARDY FISH: Well, I think it helped to get off to a great start, you know, to be brutally honest. If he goes out there and he beats me 6 2 in the first set, I’m not thinking things are going to go too great in the second.
So, you know, it’s nice to get up. It was nice to win that first set and, you know, then you say to yourself take a quote out of James’ book - Todd Martin told him, If you can win one set you can win two. I actually thought to myself, okay, I won one set, you can win another one.

Q. Obviously Roger’s run these past four years has just been incredible, really nothing like it. But now there have been some losses, and shock of shocks. Is there a different sense you think with players who are come on court against him?
MARDY FISH: No. I mean, to answer your question, brutally honest, no. I mean, no one thought no one in the locker room I mean, yeah, we’ve heard you know, we just kind of laugh at it. We just kind of think it’s kind of a joke. You know, oh, my gosh, Roger hasn’t won a tournament yet this year. You know, he’s only played two tournaments. You know, semifinals while he had mono is pretty good.
You know, that match I actually talked to him in the locker room about his match, about Australia, and he said he had a bunch of chances and it could have gone either way. Novak played really well. He just had a bit of bad luck in the beginning of the year. He came up against a really tough draw in the first round of Dubai, and, you know, played a guy that’s 11 in the world in the first round.
You know, if you’re not on top of your game I mean, everybody’s real good, and if you’re not on top of your game, you know, somewhere down the road guys are going to get you.

Q. Your matchup with Novak going into tomorrow’s championship?
MARDY FISH: We’ve played a few times. We had a 7 6 in the fourth at the US Open in 2006, and a 7 6 in the third. We played Hopman Cup, which is an exhibition type tournament. It was in the final, and I would assume that he wanted to win as much as I did.
We’ve played two good matches. Obviously he’s on a heck of a roll. I might call Andy to try to see what he did in Dubai this afternoon and try to get some tips on that. But, you know, it’s another one of these matches where I’ll go out and try to control what I can try to control and see what happens, give it everything I got.

Q. When you walk up to the net, having played a match like that and won a match like that, does your mind race? What am I going to say to him when I actually get there?
MARDY FISH: Yeah, sorry, man. (laughter.)
I’ve been on the losing end four times to him, and he’s won 53 tournaments, so I don’t feel too badly for him.

Q. We’re looking at 90 degrees again tomorrow. Do you think that helps or hurts your game?
MARDY FISH: I think it helps me. I grew up in Florida. It’s 90, would be nice in the summer. It’s over 100 there always, and the humidity is so low here it just feels like sun, so it feels nice.
So I love the heat. I love the summer months, you know, playing in Cincinnati and Indianapolis and Montreal, places like that where it’s real hot. Hopefully it will be hot again.

traduzione a cura di Andrea Nizzero

Q. Congratulazioni, Mardy. Avresti potuto giocare meglio di così oggi?
MARDY FISH: Beh, sai, non so.

Q. Roger è andato sull’argomento prima.

Abbiamo pensato fosse come uno scherzo.

MARDY FISH: Abbiamo giocato poche volte.

Adoro i mesi estivi, sai, giocare a Cincinnati e Indianapolis e Montreal, luoghi dove fa molto caldo. Speriamo sia caldo anche domani.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

NOVAK DJOKOVIC b. Rafael Nadal 6 3, 6 2

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. Did you think that was going to be that easy, and how well did you think you played?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: I played really well. I think tactically wise I played really smart. And I knew that I had to be aggressive and take the control, take over the control of the match, try to go for the shots, which I did.
A bit too much in the start of the match, but the important I think the turning point was that break on 4 3, first set. I had a bit of luck.
Anyhow, looking in the general stats of the match, I was really playing well and serving well. That is the base. It was really important.

Q. Where does this huge confidence that you have this year coming from? I think this is the biggest difference in your game in the last couple months.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, you know, if you win more and more matches you get more confident. I think that’s obvious fact. But I’m trying to remain focused on results and tennis, because I already achieved a lot with only 20 years of age, and I know that people already see me as one of the best players in the world.
But I need to stay calm and just go step by step and try to get to my lifetime goal which is to be No. 1. It’s getting closer, but still, I don’t want to go too fast and skip some things. I really need to be consistent with my results in the most important events, major events. I started the year in the best possible way, but still, it’s not over yet. I need to play finals.

Q. This is a maybe/if question: Have you played Mardy Fish before, and how have you done?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: US Open 2006.

Q. You beat him?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Yes. It was a really tough match.

Q. Is that the only time?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Yes. No, actually we played in Hopman Cup this year. Again, it was 7 6 in the third set, I think.
He’s a really difficult opponent to play against. I think the match is still not over, but he’s in the lead, obviously playing on top of his shape in this tournament, has nothing to lose. He won against some great players throughout all tournament, obviously has nothing to lose today.
If he wins, he’s not going to have anything to lose even tomorrow. No expectations for him. He’s just going to go for his shots probably and be aggressive. He’s a big server. It takes time. If I play him, I need to be patient and wait for my chances.

Q. It’s 5 1 in the second. Does that surprise you?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: It does a little bit. You know, I think his style of the game suits to Roger, but obviously Roger is not playing well today for whatever reason.
But, of course, you can’t play always well. I think for Roger it is not so good that he didn’t play quarterfinals and he didn’t have a tough match. You know, Fish is ready for it. He’s obviously deserving it. You know, he plays better.

Q. Let’s say Fish does close it out. Would you feel a bit more confident playing Mardy Fish than not saying you wouldn’t feel confident playing Roger, but more confident play Fish than playing Roger?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, probably if you play No. 1 player of the world in the finals, in the finals of any tournament, I think it’s much tougher than to play against somebody who has not been in so many finals of the major events.
But again, looking at his results and the players he won against this tournament, it’s not going to be easy, for sure. You know, winning against best player in the world, 6 3, 5 1, it’s just fantastic result.
As I said, he’s going to go for his shots. He has a big serve which he can rely on and he improved a lot from the baseline.

Q. Three different Serbians in three different finals this year in Indian Wells.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Again, Serbian Open, probably. It’s becoming a bit boring to see so many Serbians. I think it’s just unexplainable and fantastic to see so many Serbs in the top of the men’s and women’s worlds in both singles and doubles.
We are all doing so great. It’s just fantastic to see, as well, how much people in our country appreciate what we do and respect our results and, you know, we can’t ask for better.

Q. Pensava che sarebbe stata così facile, e quanto pensa aver giocato bene?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Ho giocato veramente bene.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Agli US Open 2006.

Q. Lo ha battuto?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Sì. E’ stata una partita realmente difficile.

Q. E’ stata l’unica volta?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Sì. No, in realtà abbiamo giocato nella Hopman Cup quest’anno.

Fish è pronto a vincere. Chiaramente lo sta meritando. Sta giocando meglio.

Q. Tre serbi diversi in tre diverse finali quest’anno a Indian Wells.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Ancora, l’Open di Serbia, probabilmente.

Q. You seemed to have trouble finding your game most the day, and you appeared to have an injury. Give us an overview of what happened.
RAFAEL NADAL: No, sir, no. No injury. I didn’t feel very well playing tennis. I had more mistakes than usually. Well, I feel a little bit tired from last two matches. That’s sure. Because, well, in the runs I feel a little bit more slowly than days before.
Well, if you play against one player like Novak you have to play 100% if I want to have chances to win.

Q. Did you still feel that you can take confidence from the matches you won this week?
RAFAEL NADAL: For me it’s a very positive tournament, no? Play semifinal in the first Masters Series of the season in hard court, beating two big players against Blake and Tsonga.
Today unfortunately I didn’t play my best, and day was easier than I would like. But tennis is like this. The positive thing is I’m in semifinals, no? I have to think in positive and try to go to Miami with my best chances. I going to try my best for play a very good tournament there, no?

Q. What did you take the medical timeout for? What was happening with your foot?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, I was I don’t know exactly, no? But very tough in English for me. I improve but not a lot.
MODERATOR: Just next to the nail, next to the toenail. It was just, you know, bothering me. It was hitting every time I was pushing near the toenail.
RAFAEL NADAL: I’m not saying that this affect something in the match. It’s not an excuse.

Q. It seems like with Djokovic now as opposed to last year I think you played him seven times in the last year it’s hard to hit through him to find places to exploit him.
RAFAEL NADAL: He’s a very complete player, no? Very good serve, very good backhand, very good forehand. He’s moving fast and moving well. He has very good position on court.
He has the position feel the position inside the court very easy, and that’s very difficult when you’re playing with these fast balls. He can do it, so that’s exceptional quality.
So, well, the only way for beat him is the way when I play against him in Shanghai: Very aggressive. All the time playing the ball with touching the ball with big powerful backhand, forehand, and try to play very good.

Q. How good do you think Novak is playing right now? He’s had such good result this year. Do you think he’s maybe even better than Roger right now the way he’s playing?
RAFAEL NADAL: Right now he’s No. 1 on the race, and he going to continuing be No. 1 because he has a very good result here, no?
I think he’s not better than Roger, but in the first part of the season he play better than no one, so going to have big chances for be No. 1 this year for sure. Why not?

RAFAEL NADAL: No, no. Nessun infortunio.

RAFAEL NADAL: Per me è un torneo molto positivo, no?

RAFAEL NADAL: Sì, era — Non so come dirlo in inglese. Miglioro ma non un sacco.
MODERATORE: Proprio vicino all’unghia dell’alluce.

Perché no?

ROGER FEDERER

MARDY FISH b. Roger Federer 6 3, 6 2

Q. Was it as surprising for you as it was for us?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I guess so. I don’t know how much it is for you guys.

Q. Very.
ROGER FEDERER: I’ve had a great record against him, you know, always sort of had sort of controlled matches against him, but today was different. He came out playing very, very well.
Yeah, he played great today. I mean, I can only congratulate him. Fantastic.

Q. Are you well, Roger?
ROGER FEDERER: I’m well, yeah. How are you?

Q. I don’t have to run.
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I didn’t have to run much either, today. (laughter.)

Q. Is it very tough one to explain? Okay, he did play extremely well and hit some great shots. I suppose we are always expecting a little bit more from you.
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, look, the danger of best of three matches is it can be over in no time. We all know that. Today it sort of felt like a practice match, you know.
He was just trying to go for everything and it sort of worked. Didn’t even play particularly bad on the break points and I just every time, you know, he read the right side on the serve and he kept the ball in play. When he wanted to attack, everything worked. He would never miss, really.
When I needed maybe a miss once in a while. So that was just impressive by his side, and I couldn’t do much to control it. I didn’t even think he served particularly well. It was just impossible to return his first serve, which it normally is anyway, you know. But I couldn’t get into his second serves, and that was the disappointing part about today.

Q. How do you explain a man ranked 98, hasn’t done anything for a long time, to come out and beat three top 10 players like that?
ROGER FEDERER: You’ve been around the game. You know it’s possible. He’s been it’s not like he’s been 98 for the first in his life, he just made a career breakthrough breaking into the top 100. The guy has been top 20 before, and he’s had big matches before.
Should have won Cincinnati a few years back beating Andy before he became No. 1. We know how good Mardy can be. Let’s not talk about 98 in the world. We know he’s way better than that.

Q. The way things are going this year so far, do you just feel that you’re short on match play?
ROGER FEDERER: Umm, not even particularly, you know. I did play very well against all these guys this week. Today, you know, obviously it’s a tough result, you know, but what can you do? It happens sometimes, you know.
So just better make it not happen so frequently, you know. But can only give credit to Mardy. I couldn’t do much today, and these matches sometimes come around. I’m surprised myself it hasn’t happened more in the last five years, you know. You always think one guy can outright dominate you on any given day.
People weren’t able to do it against me, so that speaks for myself. But today Mardy was really impossible to beat, it almost looked like. He was never in doubt. Everything he took it on the rise and hit winners, so it was just a great performance by his side.
I don’t even have to go too much into the match, you know. That’s why I’m maybe not that disappointed. It’s been a good week for me, anyway. I feel I’ve got the matches in I really wanted, you know. So I feel better than still 10 days ago, that’s for sure.

Q. What are your thoughts about the final tomorrow between with Fish against Djokovic?
ROGER FEDERER: Sure, interesting match, you know. I mean, Novak also having outstanding performance against Rafa today, you know. Also is probably comfortable in the scoring line, so it should be entertaining.

Q. When you do have a loss, do you still find you can learn things from them and advance your game in a way even from the losses?
ROGER FEDERER: Usually can, but not much about today. Went too quick, and couldn’t feel anything was there to be done very differently.
Could have served better, sure. Could have returned better, sure. But the guy was on top of his game. Took his chances and it was over in a heartbeat, so…

Fantastico.

Q. Lei sta bene, Roger?
ROGER FEDERER: Sto bene, si. E lei?

Q. Io non devo correre.
ROGER FEDERER: Bene, non ho dovuto correre molto neanche io, oggi. (Risata).

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA b. Maria Sharapova 6 3, 5 7, 6 2

Q. Seemed like you had more energy in the third set than the previous two sets. Were you eating anything on changeovers or drinking anything? You had a lot more energy in the third set.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: I guess I’m just fit. I felt pretty tired, you know, out there.

Q. Didn’t look like it.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: But I guess it’s my strength. I train a lot, so I felt great out there in the third set, and I think I really stepped inside and played inside, not so far behind.

Q. You’re the first person to beat Maria this year. How does that feel?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: It feels great. I don’t think Maria plays like always she can play, you know. Neither did I. But I think it was very good, interesting third set.
First, so so; second better; and third we got both our game. It was a good match, and I feel great winning.

Q. Can you talk about your success here these last two years? You’ve done very well to make the finals back to back years. Can you just talk about what’s contributed to that success?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Yeah, I feel great here. The ball bounce well. I like these balls. I love these courts. It’s very good atmosphere for me. I can stay focus, because it’s not so much moving around. I get bored, but still I’m on my thing.

Q. What do you do try to not be bored here? Have you found anything to do?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: I’m still bored. I want to go to outlet but my coach said, No, you stay at room. I’m like, Okay. I read a book, I go to the Internet, I watch movies. I love American TV. I’m lucky, so I can watch so many shows like Mtv and E Channel and watch a little bit gossip, so I’m interested in something.
I’m pretty cool, you know. You have so much free time here that can I can think a lot, so I kind of clean up my head. So it’s good. It’s good.

Q. How was it different at Wimbledon from, say, here?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: It rains. (laughter.)

Q. Really? It rains there?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Sometimes, you know, few times, few years.
Well, Wimbledon is different. Like if you would put me play with Maria, it’s going to be even less rhythm in Wimbledon playing her. In Wimbledon, it’s too much crowd, it’s too much people who like I like to meet new people, I like to chat, I like to communicate.
But you have to realize this takes your energy away. So I have to sometimes take me away from it.

Q. So how did you win the US Open? That’s the craziest of all.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: I was young. Nobody wanted even to talk to me, so I was like (waving hand). They were like, Hey, oh, she plays tennis there on the back courts, you know.

Q. How important will it be to finally get a title?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: For me it’s very important, because I’ve been to the finals and I know what’s that, you know? To play it, you know? To really play it, not to think about that it’s finals, play it.
So I think this time I can get it better, you know. Like I will need to put myself out there and play my game, you know? Not thinking about something else. Both can win, because we’re all top 4, top 3 players in the world. So it’s 50/50. Nobody has much priority to win, so we just play. Anything can happen.

Q. You said earlier this week that an Olympic gold medal would be more important to you than a Wimbledon title, and maybe a French Open title. Do you think the Olympics are much more important to Russian tennis players than other countries, than other tennis players from other countries?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: I haven’t been talking to other players, but my family it is like that because my parents are so much Olympic tradition.
Definitely I’m not going to compare, when they ask us to compare I don’t have another way to choose Olympics or French or Wimbledon. But for me, every tournament, it’s very important, and I’m going to give my best every single week. This is how you get better.

Q. If the winner of Sunday’s final had to sing karaoke in front of that center court crowd, would you welcome the challenge?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Look, who wins, rules. This is the thing which I remember, and I know it’s like this in tennis and everywhere. So the winner rules. If I win, means I rule.
Look, if I win, I’m happy. I can do pretty crazy stuff if I win. I’m not promising anything.

Q. If you win, what would you do with that trophy, the big fish trophy?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: I love this. I love the trophy. I really like the dolphin.

Mi sentivo abbastanza stanca in campo.

Q. Non sembrava.

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: E’ fantastico. Non penso Maria abbia giocato come sa. E neanche io.

È l’atmosfera giusta per me. Posso rimanere concentrata, perché non c’è molto movimento. Mi annoio, ma comunque sono concentrata.

Q. Che fa per non annoiarsi? Ha trovato qualcosa da fare?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Sono ancora annoiata.

Q. Quanto è diverso Wimbledon rispetto a qui?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Piove. (Risata).

Q. Davvero? Piove lí?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: A volte, sa, qualche volta, alcuni anni. A Wimbledon, c’è troppa folla, troppe persone. Io amo incontrare persone nuove, chiacchierare, comunicare. Perciò a volte devo allontanarmene.

Q. Allora come ha vinto gli US Open? E’ il torneo più folle di tutti.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Ero giovane. Nessuno voleva neanche parlarmi, e io ero lì..

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Mi piace. Mi piace il trofeo. Mi piace molto il delfino.

MARIA SHARAPOVA

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA b. Maria Sharapova 6-3, 5-7, 6-2

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. She did a good job dictating with her forehand, she served pretty well. But with you, you never seemed to get any rhythm.
MARIA SHARAPOVA: I was just playing with a much slower pace than I normally play with. You know, I wasn’t I wasn’t going for my shots as I normally do, and as usual, I wasn’t seeing the ball that good. I wasn’t taking the short balls and doing anything with them, kind of giving her the opportunity to get back in the points.
There were a couple important points that could have changed the match, and she ended up winning them. I think from that she gained confidence and kind of steamrolled after that in the third set.

Q. Is it fair to say you’re just a little bit worn out from Australia to now?
MARIA SHARAPOVA: Absolutely, yeah. Definitely. I’m playing a lot of tennis, been flying a lot. It’s all been work since I took a week off after the Champs. It’s pretty much been nonstop from the season to all the tournaments I’ve been playing, and Fed Cup as well.
It takes a toll on your body and your mind as well. You feel like you have to go out on the court and, you know, spend a lot of emotion and energy out there, and sometimes you just don’t have it for every match.

Q. When she’s in a good way, she is not the kind of player you want to be playing on a day when you’re not at your best, huh?
MARIA SHARAPOVA: Well, she’s a very tough, tough player. She’s not No. 2 or 3 in the world for nothing, you know. Absolutely not. I give her a lot of respect for her consistency for what she’s able to do on the court and how strong she is and how many balls she gets back.
You know, she showed a lot of that today and, you know, this court definitely suits her, her game and her serve as well, because the ball kind of jumps up. And even though I’m 6′2″ wish I was like 6′5″ on these courts it would be a little bit easier. But it still kind of jumps up away from you, and especially today she used that to her advantage.

Q. So what do you do during the next week? Do you put the racquet down and just relax before Miami or…
MARIA SHARAPOVA: I don’t know. (laughter.) I’m going to play it by ear. You know, my body is kind of hurting a little bit. Like I said, I just I just want to I just want to be smart about the decisions I make, and that’s going to be, I don’t know, made after a good night’s rest, and have a little sitdown conversation.
You know, just see. I mean, you know, at this point of the year I can’t really be putting any pressure to myself and saying, You got to go out there and play next week. If I’m not going to be ready, I’m not going to be ready. No one’s forcing me to go out there and play.
It just has to be smart decisions just because this year is so young and because I’ve already played so much. As a 21 year old, I, you know, I’ve got to kind of stand up and make some mature decisions that will help me throughout my career, you know.

Q. Justine, Serena, and Venus don’t play here, but Miami is a mandatory. So if you take off Miami and they’re playing, is it a big deal for the tour or not?
MARIA SHARAPOVA: I actually don’t know. You can ask them. I’m sure that there’s a pretty big fine, but the body’s more important than a fine.

MARIA SHARAPOVA: Non lo so. (risata).

MARDY FISH

MARDY FISH b. David Nalbandian 6 3, 6 7, 7 6

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. Well done, Mardy. Was that one of the most satisfying wins of your career?
MARDY FISH: Yeah, possibly. With someone like David’s, you know, ability to come back and ability to win tight matches, you know, that one feels just as good as, you know, Hewitt does, for sure.

Q. Did it feel like maybe you lost it when those two match points didn’t go your way?
MARDY FISH: You’re never in a great situation when the guy is serving for the match. You know, I felt like I had some pretty good opportunities there. You know, score wise I didn’t really get into many points, except for many maybe the second set. At 4 All in the second set I had some chances there. I think I had three break points there.
He had played well on those break points and made a lot of first serves. When he didn’t make second serves he hit some tough ones and I was able to capitalize on a couple of missed first serves there in the tiebreak right at the end.

Q. 3 4, 15 40; 4 5, 15 40 losing match points, dropping serve. What’s going through your mind?
MARDY FISH: I’m thinking hopefully he’ll double fault at 15 40 so I can win that game, and sure enough, he did.

Q. He comes out and serves for the match and you’re a break down. You looked like you were done then.
MARDY FISH: Well, I mean, yeah. Yeah, I mean, I kind of felt like I was done, to be honest. You know, I had chances, you know, and just didn’t you know, I’d be lying to you if I just said, yeah, I felt like I was going to break right there and win the match.
Again, yeah, I mean, I had I didn’t give up, and I had some chances. I lost first point of that game, as well.

Q. Does it seem a little bit unfair that you play a match like that, your reward is to play the world’s best player, and he’s had a day off?
MARDY FISH: Yeah, as if he needs any more ammo, if you will.
No, I mean, you know, we’ve all gotten walkovers and we’ve all we have all been sick and we’ve all pulled out. But, you know, hopefully he’ll be a little too rested, maybe. Maybe a little too…

Q. Can you talk about the company you’re in in the semifinals? It’s the top three players in the world. You’re the Cinderella guy?
MARDY FISH: And me. (laughter.)
Well, you know, I guess the only thing you can go by is what your ranking is. I obviously don’t feel like I’m the 98th ranked player in the world or playing like that. You know, I don’t you know, I’ve got a lot of self confidence. You have to out here to stick with some of these guys.
Yeah, I mean, it’s nice. It’s a nice breath to be in although it’s just one tournament. Hopefully I can use this result no matter how it ends, to keep moving on.
Again, like I said, I don’t have anything I didn’t win a match on grass last year. That’s my best surface. So I’m really looking forward to the rest of Miami and rest of here and through the year.

Q. You were talking about crowd support. Everyone loves a Cinderella. That has to be huge?
MARDY FISH: Yeah, they were huge. You know, again, like Doug said, it was tough to lose that one and get down and, you know, come back, but they were you know, they were there and supportive the whole way. I’m extremely thankful for that.

Q. How much of success against top guys, or just even being a top 10, top 20 player is actually loving the fight, committing to the fight, not worrying whether you’re going to go out there three hours, 7 6 in the third, dropping match points, the ability to keep yourself in those matches?
MARDY FISH: Yeah, you’d be hard pressed to find people who don’t love to compete out here. It’s really hard to not want to win a match like that out there when you have, I don’t know how many people were there, but it felt like 50,000 were cheering for me.
And, you know, it’s really hard to not want to win that match and not want to try to come back. You know, everybody’s competitive. It’s such a cliché, Oh, he’s so competitive. Andy is so competitive. James is so competitive. Everybody’s competitive. Everybody wants to win. You know, you’ve got to want it more than the other guy.

traduzione a cura di Monique Filippella

Q. Ben fatto, Mardy.

Sa, ho molta fiducia in me.

Tutti siamo competitivi. È un tale cliché, Oh, è così competitivo. Andy è così competitivo. James è così competitivo. Tutti sono competitivi. Tutti vogliono vincere. Tu devi volerlo più dell’altro.

DAVID NALBANDIAN

MARDY FISH b. David Nalbandian 6 3, 6 7, 7 6

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. You served for the match at 6 5 in the third set. Did you expect to close it out at that point? It had been a pretty tight match.
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Well, of course. The third set was very tight. We didn’t break each other until the end. I think he played a very good game at that moment. He just do one easy mistake and then he played great. Not much to do, except that maybe I have to play more with the first serve in that moment but he played great.

Q. Were you at all surprised about how well Fish has been playing? I mean, he had struggled the last few years, and he’s having a pretty good start to the year. Was anything out there about him surprising to you?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: No. He’s always dangerous. On this surface, when surface fast, he’s very dangerous all the time. So it’s not it’s not strange for me that see him play like that.

Q. How would you evaluate your performance here in this tournament?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Well, I try to expect to be a little farther, but the first two matches was very complicated both times. I served two quick matches that made me confidence, and then again with Ferrero I play much better, feel much better on the court, and today could have made it but I feel I played good today. It was a little windy, so it was a bit tough. I’m going to Miami that I play good tennis here.

Q. 2007 didn’t seem to start out well for you, but then you really turned it around in the second half of the season and have been playing very well so far in 2008. What’s made the difference for you?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Nothing. Just playing, be concentrate on the court. It’s normal that tennis players or sportsmen that you can’t be always 100 percent on the court. Sometimes you win; sometimes you lose. Simple. The season is so long. You can’t play great all the time.

Q. Were you looking forward to playing Roger again and maybe beating him a third time in a row?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Why not?

Q. Do you have some insight or some secrets on how that’s done?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Yeah.

Q. Would you like to share them or something?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: No.

Q. So you really think you could beat him again? You’re looking forward to it?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: Uh huh.

DAVID NALBANDIAN: No è sempre pericoloso. Perciò no, non è strano secondo me vederlo giocare così.

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Niente. Solo giocare, rimanere concentrato in campo. Semplice.

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Perché no?

DAVID NALBANDIAN: Si.

Q. Potrebbe dircelo?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: No.

Q. Dunque lei pensa realmente che potrebbe batterlo ancora? Non ne vede l’ora?
DAVID NALBANDIAN: L’Uh uhm.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

NOVAK DJOKOVIC b. Stanislas Wawrinka 7 6, 6 2

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. Your reaction to the final point of the first set tiebreak was as though you kind of won the championship. I mean, that was probably the point of the championship. How important was that in the overall outcome?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: It’s very important to me. I’m a very emotional player on the court and very emotional person off the court as well. I like to express my feelings, and this is obviously very important for me.
As you could see by the reaction, it was one of the not one of the, probably the most important point of the game.

Q. Thoughts about the next round? You know, both players, who you might play.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: I never played with James, so if I play him it will be a new encounter and new experience. But we know each other for a long time, of course. We been practicing and watching each other for a couple of years already.
The other side, I played against Rafa. I have negative score against him. I been successful against him on the hard courts outdoors, so I can say that I feel pretty confident if I play him. We know each other’s game a lot, and we had very a lot of meetings in this the last year.
So it will be it’s going to be interesting whoever I play. Again, it’s going to be interesting to see who’s going to win this match, because Rafa think, he never won against James. So for him, it’s going mental fight to get through.

Q. Can you talk about playing Rafa last year in the finals and how that became a great learning experience for you? Because you got him again the following tournament.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, I did learn a lot. Last year’s finals here at Indian Wells was my first finals in the Masters Series. I was still inexperienced, young. Even though he’s only one year older than me he had much more experience and many titles, so I think I was really nervous at start of the match.
Then I had some chances in the second set, but I was a bit unlucky. We had a lot of tough matches on a lot of different surfaces, so every time I play him I learn something new.
I’m going to try to figure out the way I have to play against him. He’s a big fighter. You know, he’s a kind of player who doesn’t give you any free points, and he’s going to play every point no matter what the result is.
That is what makes him so special, and that’s what drives his opponents probably crazy. They don’t get so much free points. This is human, and hopefully if I play him I can be myself and aggressive and get the best out the past matches I had.

Q. Do you think you’re a little bit hard done by the timing of the umpire’s call against you today?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: No. Listen, it’s not a matter of the call, it’s a matter of timing. I’ve talked to them a lot in the past couple months, and I said and they’re good guys. I don’t have nothing against them.
It’s just they’re not choosing the good timing. It happened the same thing in Australia. I am aware of the fact that I’m late, and there is no problem. I’m going to accept my I’m going to accept my blame and my fault.
But you have to warn me before. You can’t just give me a warning like that before without giving me the prewarning and giving me the worst possible moment: 30 40, 5 3, I think. Okay, I went over the limit, but you should tell me before. This is something that I had against him, but okay.

Q. So maybe the previous changeover they should, say You’re taking a wee bit too much time here.
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: This is usually what the more experienced umpires do. Mohamed is for me one the best. He always gives me a prewarning and tells me to hurry up. If he gives me a warning afterwards, okay I take it. It’s my fault.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: È molto importante per me.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Bene, ho imparato molto.

ROGER FEDERER

ROGER FEDERER b. Ivan Ljubicic 6-3 6-4

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. How was the cake? Did you eat any?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, just had some downstairs. It was nice. He was nice enough to serve it to me.

Q. How did your comfort level compare today from the previous round?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, it was quite different in terms of conditions. Definitely wasn’t flying out there as much. I was definitely slower tonight, you know, than during the day.
And but again, I felt good. You know, I really felt good. I really thought I moved extremely well. Came up with some great plays at the right time. He’s a tough player. You know, to break three times is a great effort, I think.

Q. You looked like you were in complete cruise control at 3-Love in the second set, and then you went through a bit of a bumpy patch. Can you talk about that?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, it isn’t really stuff I want to talk about, but I can do it, of course. It’s — I thought he played a good game, first of all, to break me. He his the one scream across court that just clipped the line. So that was a bad start.
But I think I served three great serves, you know, to really actually get the ball into play, and every time he returned it back. Just, you know, made me work really hard. It was sort of uphill against a wind, so it was a bit more difficult for me from the baseline.
It kind of was two good serves, but then he was too tough. But after that I had some more chances, you know, but you can’t break him every time with that great serve he has. And maybe didn’t play my best on a couple of the break points, you know. I think both of them that I challenged I just missed by a little bit.
It was a bit unfortunate, but I think he hung in there quite well. It just shows how quickly a match can turn around. I was just happy actually to serve it out pretty well.

Q. How are you feeling physically compared to earlier in the year? Are you 100 percent healthy now?
ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I mean, I feel like I’m moving well. I’m jumpy out there. I feel like I’m quick, good reaction, especially on the return. He really had trouble acing me today. Guy with that big of a serve, you know, to get it back so consistently like I did tonight, it was sort of old times, you know.
I felt like nothing could get past me, and this is exactly how I want to feel this week.

Q. In the next round you have Tommy, but was there a another part of you that was hoping to get another shot at Andy?
ROGER FEDERER: Not really. To me it doesn’t matter to me who I play. To play Tommy, we’ve had some good battles in the past years, and we’re good friends off the court. We go way back to 2000 when we played at the Olympic Games. We’ve always had nice matches, and he totally deserves to be where he is.
He beat Roddick and Murray on the way. He’s in great shape. I’m happy to see him playing well again after his injury. That can be tricky. I think it’s the third on his shoulder. It’s nice to see him back and playing well.

Q. Question about Dubai. I mean, what’s your interest in that part of the world just personally and businesswise? You know, why are you there?
ROGER FEDERER: Umm, sort of came along just like that, you know. Went on vacation the first time after my second Wimbledon win for a week, and sort of really enjoyed it there. I remember once I went to practice for the first time when I played with Tony Roche, you know, sort of undercover. I did it back in Dubai after the Bangkok tournament.
Just sort of felt like this is great heat here to practice and sort of went back for a vacation also a couple times, and thought, Well, this is good time. It’s winter in Switzerland and it’s summer in Dubai. Still, it’s warm enough to practice, and this is why I built up sort of a camp or a base over there.
It’s been like this for the last couple of years now and it’s worked well for me, and it’s really just for practice and vacational (sic) reasons, really.

Q. It’s a part of the world that’s booming sportswise. A lot of things going on and investment dollars going in there. Do you have business interests in that part of the world?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, it is interesting when you spend time over there you get sucked into it. You hear so many things. Everybody’s so positive in terms of, you know, everything’s possible, you know. Nothing is impossible. That’s sort of a nice way of thinking, you know.
They’re building at an incredible pace, and they believe in the region, you know, and you can’t help but being intrigued by the vision of the people over there.
That’s why I’m always open, you know, to hearing around, listen around, and so many things going on, many projects, you know, towers going up. It’s just interesting. I’ll definitely keeping my ears open.

Q. On the other side of things, Roger, what are the qualities of your Swiss heritage, and how do you think it helps you as a tennis player out there in navigating your position slightly?
ROGER FEDERER: I don’t know. I mean, I don’t even know what it is. Is it Swiss or South African? What is it? Is it hard work?
I’ve always been a leader, you know, in — if it was school or in sports or whatever, I always wanted to be the best, and I loved leading a team, you know, when I was in a team sport.
So I don’t know if it’s got much to do with where I come from, really. I had great upbringing. My parents were fantastic, and Switzerland gave me all the possibilities. The federation was really nice to me and, you know, they paid for a lot of things.
I had the best coaches along the way, and I was just really fortunate. Thank God I realized at the right time, went to start to work hard and never stopped believing that I could become, not only great tennis player, but become the best, because I think that is also the difference.
For me, No. 100 in the world wasn’t enough. I always wanted to be better than that and to be the best and could become not only in the juniors but also the senior level. It was a great feeling, and I’m very proud of my achievements.

Q. Speaking of your country, are you planning on playing the Olympics this year and the Davis Cup in the future?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, yeah. Davis Cup is a big goal for me, always said that. So, yeah, I’ll be there, and I’m very proud to represent Switzerland.

traduzione a cura di Margherita Polacci

Q. Come era il dolce?

RF: Le condizioni sono state molto diverse.

Q. Ti senti fisicamente bene adesso rispetto all’inizio dell’anno? Sei al 100% della forma?
RF: Si, mi muovo bene, molto bene in campo.

RF: No, non mi interessa contro chi gioco.

Q. Straight sets win. How happy were you with your performance today?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Well, pretty good. I think I played better first set, but in the second she played a little bit better, and I missed few, but it was pretty good still, and I’m confident playing out there. It was good win for me after playing her in Australian Open.

Q. When you go out for a match like today, any memories of the Australian Open or is it a new match, new tournament?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Definitely new match, new tournament, but I think some signs of Australian Open, I remember that I didn’t do this well or that well and I still was close in the match. When I do everything right, this is the result which comes.

Q. Do you have any preference to who you play?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: No, both of them play similar game. Maria is more confident for me at the moment. She is, I guess the favorite tonight.
But Daniela has always played well in this tournament. No preference.

Q. As part of your preparation, will you watch the match tonight?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: I think I would watch a little bit, either on TV or there. It’s going to be interesting match also to watch not just because I play them.

Q. You ever look at yourself on YouTube? I was looking yesterday. I saw you do some karaoke.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Oh, my God. This is disgusting. I tell you, I watched this. I sometimes I want to make my friends laugh and I show to them. They’re like, Oh, my God.
Because these guys, they lied to me. They should not put this, first of all, like that. They told me, You can yell or do whatever. We’re not going take your voice. They say, Just open your mouth, so I wanted to show emotions and then I go to the final with Justine, and first thing I see on the TV, it’s me. I’m like, Oh, my God. I was like, Oh, no way. I was so embarrassed.

Q. Did you see the other ones?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Karaoke? Yeah, I saw actually, I did two karaokes. And I did once two at French Open. Second one was a little bit better. I been improving. It’s impossible to do worse, actually. I improved.
Then I did one in US Open, but I never got to see this one nowhere. I love Serena’s one, how she shake booty. That is hard. She got my trophy. Believe me, she teach me that. But I don’t think I’m going to do.

Q. Did you see Novak’s one?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Yeah. I don’t like that. I tell you, for me, the trophy is Serena’s.

Q. I asked Lleyton about it last night, and he makes it sound like they lied to all of you to get you to do that.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Yeah, yeah. This is the thing. You don’t start to say that I want to sing karaoke and I’m good at that. Not at all. No, no, no. I’m experiment person, and I like to try new things. I say, Okay, I’ll do it.
Once in Miami they wanted me to climb something. I climbed. They wanted me to do snowboard in Dubai. Well, actually, the snowboards in Dubai, I asked to do something different. I do that. You know, new things should be there on the tour so people don’t get bored how we do press and how we warm up.

Q. So karaoke is dead for you now?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Well, I got to practice on my own maybe at home so somebody can teach me so I’m not going to be that embarrassed.

Q. If you had a choice of a song, what would it be?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Oh, my God. I wish it would be Ayo Technology of 50 Cent. But he talk so fast I need some lessons first. Like if I would take some lessons, I can do anything. You know, I don’t want to go out there and embarrass myself. Still, it’s fun, because people write their comments, like, It’s disgusting, she embarrass herself.
I’m like, Hey, why don’t you guys try to play tennis for all your life, 10 hours a day and then go do ice skating, for example? Who not going embarrass themself.

Q. You said you improved the second time you did karaoke. Maybe that third time with a bit of practice it’ll be really good.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Yeah, but I don’t want put myself through the risk and embarrass myself one more time. Because the second time I was like, No, I’m not going to sing, guys. You have to put somebody else.

Q. Vittoria in due set. Quanto sei felice della tua prestazione oggi?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Abbastanza. E’ stata una buona vittoria per me dopo averla incontrata all’Australian Open.

Io guardavo ieri. Ho visto che hai fatto del karaoke.
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Oh, mio Dio. E’ disgustoso. L’ho guardato. Io a volte voglio fare ridere i miei amici e glielo mostro.
Ero come, Oh, no. Ero così imbarazzata.

Q. Hai visto gli altri?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Karaoke? Ho migliorato.
E’ difficile. Per me è la migliore. Credetemi, me lo ha insegnato. Ma non penso che lo farò.

Q. Hai visto quello di Novak?
SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Si.

Niente affatto. No, no, No. Sono una persona che sperimenta, ed ama tentare cose nuove.

Dovete trovare qualcun altro.

ANDY MURRAY

TOMMY HAAS b. Andy Murray 2 6, 7 5, 6 3

Q. Do you spend a lot of time kind of kicking yourself after a match like that, especially those opportunities in the early in the third?
ANDY MURRAY: You can do if you think that you screwed it up a little bit, but I don’t think that I miss any sitters, I didn’t make any mistakes. But I guess if I was playing a bit more aggressive then, a lot like I was in the first, set coming to the net, and, you know, taking my chances a bit better, you know, I’d be obviously much more happy because I think I would have won the match if I had done that.
But, you know, I still think that I was good enough to win the match today, and I’m disappointed I didn’t.
But, you know, I’ll learn from it, because, you know, stuff that I did out there in the first set and the first few games that showed me that I can, you know, I can play very good tennis and win a set really comfortably against someone as good as him if I can continue to keep that up.
But it’s a consistency thing and making sure you do it the whole way through the match, and I didn’t do that today.

Q. Obviously Wimbledon is a long, long way away, but still it’s always a big tournament for you. What would you consider a result that would be successful at Wimbledon this year?
ANDY MURRAY: I actually dreamt for the first time in my life about winning a Grand Slam, actually winning match point at a Grand Slam about two days ago. I kind of woke up, and now I feel like I’m ready to go on and play on and get deep into the Slams now. So, God, I want to win it.
You know, I’m going to try my best to do that, but I know it’s going to be difficult. There are certain things I’m going to have to do better, you know, if I’m going to do well at Wimbledon. But I played well on grass before, and I’m obviously looking forward to it, because I missed it last year.
But, you know, you never know in Grand Slams. You can get some tough draws like I got in Australia, and sometimes the draws can open up for you. You know, hopefully I’ll get a good draw.

Q. What was the setting of the dream?
ANDY MURRAY: I don’t even know. I just know I won a Grand Slam and I woke up few hours later and I was unbelievably disappointed. (laughter.)

Q. We’ve had that dream, a few of us? Did you say a swear word or something like that when you realized it was just a dream?
ANDY MURRAY: No, I was just a bit disappointed. (laughter.)
It was the first time I had, you know, first time I dreamt about something like that. You know, I think that it well, it’s kind of made me realize that I’m not too not as far away from it as I was a few years ago.

Q. Were you actually lifting the trophy or what was the…
ANDY MURRAY: I can’t even remember. I just remember, you know, being on the floor in the last point. You know what dreams are like. Tend to be a bit strange. You know, you can wake up and not quite understand what happened, but I definitely, definitely won a Grand Slam.

Q. Miles, I don’t know him or anything, but watching him here he seems so calm, doesn’t seem to be so emotional and like Brad, the other extreme in a way. Is it easier with Miles or do you notice a difference there?
ANDY MURRAY: I think when it does get to big matches, you know, I think the calmer your coach can be the better. Because I think in tennis matches and a lot of sports, there are so many momentum shifts and, you know, you get really high when you’re winning and unbelievably low when you’re losing.
You know, it can be a bit of a distraction if you feel like well, I guess it brings you down a little bit as well. You’re on such a high and feel a little bit low. Miles is pretty calm and right in the middle and doesn’t get too fired up. You know, I think that’s a good thing.

Q. When do you go to Miami, and who’s going with you?
ANDY MURRAY: Same people I’ve got with me this week. I guess I’ll probably go tomorrow or the following day. You know, I guess it’s probably best to get there as soon as possible and get used to the conditions. It’s going to be a big tournament for me next week.

ANDY MURRAY: Non lo so.

ANDY MURRAY: Non riesco a ricordare.

Q. you talk about what happened from 5 2 in the third set ahead?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don’t know, no? I always try to fight every point. I have a little bit lucky, for sure, because maybe come back in the match with 5 2, losing 5 2 in the third, especially against big server like Tsonga, the normal thing is lose 6 3, no?
But, well, I have tough first point in 5 3, so long. Finally I can won this point, and that gives me confidence, no? So important for me having I think having this victory anyway. The victory important for me, but the victory like this always a special and give me confidence. I will be better.

Q. Seemed like at times you were playing well defending, and then you would go offense aggressive and then defending, then offense. Talk about how you were feeling mentally and what your approach was to the match?
RAFAEL NADAL: Tsonga is a tough, because if he serve well, it’s very difficult to try play aggressive. His second serve is tough, because the bounce is very strange and difficult to attack.
The true is when I have the chance, I try to have the point on the forehand and trying to start the point with against his backhand.
But when he has the chance, he has unbelievable forehand, no? So I think I didn’t play I play a good match. I play comfortable match, because I didn’t have too much mistakes.
Probably I have some mistakes with the forehand was because in the last weeks I didn’t have very good results, but I feel very well, the ball.

Q. talk about the mental game at the end of third set. He’s obviously a very talented player, Australian Open final. But you have the three Grand Slam Championships, the three French Opens, many titles. At the end it looked like you were mentally stronger than he was.
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, it’s difficult to say something like this in one match, no? The true is, well, I have more years on the top position, like I have three years I win a lot of matches like today.
Well, some important matches, like two finals in Rome, some matches, a lot of the matches, no? Youzhny in Wimbledon, this year against Moya, one match like this in Chennai.
So the important thing is try to be there all the time, no, try to believe in the victory. Anyway, if you’re losing 5 2 in the third, try to be focus in every point. The normal thing is lose, but if you are there, you’re going to have one chance, no?

Q. Tsonga expressed he was a little disturbed about how long you took with the serve, and he said he complained to the umpire. Did you hear the complaint, and does that ever effect you when players complain about how much time you take on your serve?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I think it’s not nice for the other player to go to the umpire and go to say you have to put time violation to other player, no, because the umpire is there for this. So you don’t have to do that, no?

E’ importante per me aver vinto comunque.

Be’ e’ difficile dirlo dopo un match.

JO-WILFRIED TSONGA

RAFAEL NADAL b. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-7, 7-6, 7-5

Clicca qui per leggere la traduzione

Q. The other day Rafa said that the first time you beat him, it wasn’t so much about your game but he didn’t play good that day. What do you think about that?
JO WILFRIED TSONGA: I don’t know, but today if I played like the last time I won in two sets for sure. Today it was more difficult for me because my game in the back was not very good, backhand, it was very difficult to play and that’s it. But maybe if he says that, he’s right. I don’t know.

Q. You were ahead 5 2 in the set. Talk about how the last 5 games, how it got away from you.
JO WILFRIED TSONGA: For me it was difficult, because he serve well at 5 2, so 5 3, and then he broke me, and then he serve well again, and after, it was tough because he was in the good way, in the good state of mind, so it was difficult for me.
I lost.

Q. How important was this match in your own mind in terms of what you’ve done this year and a chance to play again now and show you could do it again? Was it a very important match for you?
JO WILFRIED TSONGA: Yeah, it was a very important match for me, because I would like to show everybody it’s not my run in Australian Open is not lucky, it’s not yeah, it’s not lucky.
I want to prove everybody I can play at this level, so yeah, I’m disappointed about this.

Q. How hard is it to he takes so much time between points. How hard is it for you to wait and wait and wait for him to play?
JO WILFRIED TSONGA: Yes, I know, but I don’t know. The umpire is here to make his job, and he put one call at the first set and then nothing. I don’t know. Maybe you have to ask the umpire.

Q. But does it bother you?
JO WILFRIED TSONGA: Sometimes, yes, of course. Because when you play Rafa or Novak, it’s difficult when they put like 25 times the ball on the ground. You are like this. You never know when he’s going to serve.
Yeah, it’s tough, but it’s the game and there is umpire here for respect the rule. That’s it. So I have nothing to say about it. I just have to play.

Q. When you were speaking to the umpire in the third set, was that about Rafa’s taking too much time or was it a line call?
JO WILFRIED TSONGA: No, it was about the time, yeah.

Q. Can you just talk a little bit about the Davis Cup tie coming up against the United States and how you feel France’s chances are?
JO WILFRIED TSONGA: I don’t know for the moment. I know I have a lot of chance to play against United States, and me and Richard played well in this tournament. We’re in the good way, so we are excited to play the Davis Cup.

Q. Did you think the United States is the favorite or you think it’s even?
JO WILFRIED TSONGA: They’re favorites because they are they have the best ranking, but like I said before, we are in the good way with Richard, so we will see.

Non so.

Non so. Forse deve chiedere all’arbitro.

Q. Ma l’infastidisce?
JO WILFRIED TSONGA: A volte, sì, certo.

JO WILFRIED TSONGA: No, riguardava il tempo.

Q. Coming into this tournament you spoke about the need to get matches under your belt. In some ways, would you have preferred a tougher workout today?
ROGER FEDERER: No. Actually I enjoy matches like this, really. I mean, for me, having a sensation like I had today towards the end of the second set when you feel everything’s going your way, you’ve got his game perfectly figured out and everything you’re trying to do sort of works as well, it’s just a good feeling.
I think this is also what you want to do, then, is you want to try to run over your opponent. Not give him a chance anymore. I was really happy to break that often, and no problems whatsoever on my own serve. It was a perfect match really for me.

Q. In these baseline days, is it nice to play against a player who plays the way he does?
ROGER FEDERER:
Well, you know, we have similar games, I guess. One handed backhand, we try to play aggressive from the baseline. When you’ve got the edge, because maybe I’m a bit smaller, bit more athletic, just have a tendencies to get to more balls and be in a better position.
I thought I had the upper hand from the baseline actually early on in the match, and that was key for me, knowing that from the baseline there’s no need to panic.
I served really beautifully today, I think, which was very important for me to put the pressure on Nicolas. I was surprised how well I returned his serve. I think he can definitely serve better than that. He didn’t really go for the outright aces, which is good for me, because I got really plenty of balls back into play and from the baseline I was in control.

Q. You mentioned after the match the other day that you just wanted to play conservatively. Were you trying to make a point to push yourself and be more aggressive?
ROGER FEDERER:
Well, different opponent, different day. I mean, Garcia Lopez was playing from the baseline, trying to run around his backhand, you know. Playing with a lot of spin and sort of also tends to like just move you around and wait for a mistake.
With him it’s a different. He’s going to force the issue. You are a going to see many more unforced errors from his point, but maybe more offensive play from my side because we both want to get to the net as quick as possible.
Look, I’ve always enjoyed playing against the Frenchmen. They have good techniques, playing style, unbelievable shot making. It sometimes tends to be to be a bit easier playing against them. They make you better tennis than, for instance the Spaniards, who are just going to throw the ball into play.

Q. Computer shows you and Rafa to be pretty close in points, but do you feel he’s close to you these days?
ROGER FEDERER:
Well, obviously, yes. I mean, he’s been playing great, you know. He’s been playing consistent. He’s been playing more than me, so of course you have to expect him to do well here again. I think this surface suits him.
After I lost here last year, I remember he was I was thinking, Well, if Rafa doesn’t win here something’s wrong, and he did. Didn’t lose a set. I expect him to do similar things here again this year.
He’s very tough with this type of surface. Yeah, he’s close, but he has more points to defend in the next few weeks and months.
But that’s not really my focus at the moment. For me it’s to do well here at Indian Wells and see how the points are standing when we go into Miami.

Q. Do you think his hardcourt game has improved?
ROGER FEDERER:
Yeah, he’s improved it since the last few years. The only problem is he seems to always run into a guy who is on an incredible run. Sometimes it’s Youzhny, sometimes it was Berdych, and then it was Tsonga at the Australian Open. Guys can take away time from him. He struggles on hardcourt.
That’s always gonna happen, but these guys need to step up every time as well. It’s not going to happen every week, and Rafa is also going to be there to take it if these guys are not there. This is why Rafa is so strong. He beat Roddick last year, Djokovic last year here. He’s proved it on grass, how great a player he is on grass courts and hardcourts, quick courts.
There’s no need for him to improve anymore. He’s there already.

Q. You come to the net quite a lot, but I doubt you’d describe yourself in terms of a serve and volleyer in terms of a Stefan Edberg or Pat Rafter of the past. Do you think in this day and age it’s possible to be out and out serve and volleyer and compete at the very top of the game?
ROGER FEDERER:
I think it’s possible, for sure. Yeah. The conditions have become very slow with the balls and courts and everything slowing down. But I think if you volley very well, you know, like Edberg would have done in the past or Pete or Rafter, Becker and these guys, you know, they’re such great athletes and so good at the net, you know, it’s I think you could put an incredible amount of pressure on the baseline players today. You could take away the time from them.
But it is hard, because maybe we return way better today and pass much better because conditions are a bit slower and because we everybody’s practicing that way. But I would be interested in my own game if I would just start serve and volleying first, second serve and see where it would take me in the ranking at the end of the year. It would be interesting to see.

Q. You’ve done a great job over the years neutralizing the strong shots, strokes of the opponents like Andy’s serve or Agassi’s groundies. But is Rafa’s forehand, particularly on clay, the toughest stroke you’ve had to deal with?
ROGER FEDERER:
Yeah, look, I’m not sure if it’s just his forehand, you know. Let’s say it’s more his movement than anything else. His forehand and backhand seems is never going to break down really, especially on clay.
I can’t see people talking about him, that that being a weakness. It’s amazing what kind of pace he can get off the backhand and how good his defense is off the backhand and how good his slice has become. People underestimate his game entirely.
No, look, it’s good. These guys are good stuff. We have seen Agassi’s groundies, and there’s always somebody new that comes up with something that challenges your game. Rafa, I really think, is his intense movement on the court.

RF:

RF:
