• Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are the only two 2007 quarterfinalists to have returned to the last eight here.

• For five of the players, this is their first Australian Open quarterfinal.

• There is one first-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who is also the only unseeded quarterfinalist. He is also the only player to advance to the last eight not to have won a hard court title.

• Seven nations are represented in the quarterfinals. Spain is the only nation with more than one player in the last eight. There are two Spaniards in the quarterfinals here for the second successive year.

• Federer is the only Australian Open champion left in contention; he and Nadal are the two Grand Slam champions through, with the possibility that Hewitt will join them.

• Nadal and Djokovic are the only player definitely through to the quarterfinals without dropping a set.

• Youzhny is the only quarterfinalist to have won a title this year, at Chennai, but there are two players who have reached a final this year. Nadal lost to Youzhny in the Chennai final, while Nieminen was the runner-up at Adelaide.

• All eight of the quarterfinalists are in their twenties

• Henin and Sharapova, who have nine Grand Slam titles between them, last met in the Tour Championships final in Madrid, with the Belgian emerging victorious from a match which lasted three hours and 24 minutes, the longest in the Open era.

• The winner of the Henin-Sharapova battle will meet either No.3 seed Jelena Jankovic or defending champion Serena Williams, who have been slated to play the opening match on Rod Laver Arena
