INTERVISTA A DJOKOVIC

DJOKOVIC: Oggi ho giocato molto meglio.
Q. (In French) Did you find it an easier match than the one you played versus Olivier Patience?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: (In English) I played much better today. Against Olivier, I was probably — it was probably much more difficult because, you know, I was not playing my game, and I was playing against him and 10,000 people, which was maybe, you know, this fact was making more difficult for me in that match. You know, but I think the most important thing in that match was that I played the best tennis in the important moments. Today I managed to step in, which I was planning to do, you know, trying to speak with a coach and see where I made mistakes, you know, in the last three matches and try to get better. Especially, I was taking care of my physical strength and health, and I was trying to be ready. And today, I was feeling really good, and I showed it on the court. Especially, you know, being aggressive makes me happy now. And I know that now I’m playing my game and going with a lot of confidence and motivation in the next match.

Era in buone condizioni. Io ho controllato l’incontro e chiuso in tre set. I risultati prima o dopo arriveranno.
Q. You seem to be pretty confident about your chances to win this tournament. Is it something you believed for a long time, or is it just because you made a good first week?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: Well, I cannot say I made a great first week. I had — you know, first three matches I played against the players who are much lower ranked than me, and I didn’t play my best tennis. So I wasn’t happy about my first week. But I’m very happy about today’s match. I played against a player who prefers this surface, and he won against David Ferrer and some other players. He was in good shape, and a lot of confidence, and I managed to beat him in straight sets, you know. It’s a positive thing for me. But I didn’t come here, you know, with the goal to win the tournament, like that was my goal before I started to play. Like I said before, I am trying to go step by step, you know. Just play my next match, look at my next opponent. You know, results will come sooner or later.

Tu hai due fratelli più piccoli. Ti senti più responsabilizzato, hai maggiori pressioni. Come li vedi?
Tutti vanno a vedere come giocano.
Q. You have two younger brothers, I understand. You have some pressures on you as a young player with a lot of expectations. What about as an older brother, what kind of responsibility do you feel in the way you conduct yourself and play? How much do you see them, too? How much do you get to hit with them?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: It’s difficult for them. I think that they have more pressure than me when I was their age. Why? Because they have an older brother who is the 6 in the world, you know, making a great results. Everybody expects for me now to be one of the best. But I think it’s on them now, the big pressure, because everybody back home or wherever they show up, everybody go to see them, how they play. And it’s a lot of pressure, you know, Djokovic’s brother, let’s see how he plays. And it’s not easy to play at their age in front of so many people and a lot of expectations. The good thing about their careers in life is that they have me to show them, to help them, to give them advice. I’m trying to do that as much as I can, but you all know that I am on the tour, really traveling, basically, 11 out of 12 months a year, so I don’t see them very often. But the bad thing about it, as I said, it’s that pressure. But I’ll do really everything to help them out.

DJOKOVIC: No, no. Non penso.
Q. You’re 20, and Jonas Bjorkman is 35. Can you imagine playing at this level, maybe many four-hour matches, for another 15 years?
NOVAK DJOKOVIC: No. No. I don’t think — well, it’s difficult to say. You know, I’m 15 years younger than he is. You know, he’s playing all his life and he’s really taken care of his body. Obviously, you know, you see that, him playing first two rounds in five sets. Then, I don’t know, third round, four sets now, again, three sets, long match, plus doubles, and sometimes mixed doubles, I really question myself, you know, where is this energy coming from, you know. And it’s really nice to see somebody really enjoying so much. I think he has in front of — on the first place, he has a lot of passion for this sport, and that’s why he’s playing so much.
