Opening the schedule on Rod Laver Arena will be Russians Anna Chakvetadze (6) and Maria Kirilenko (27). The two meet for the fifth time in their careers, but for the first time at grand slam level. Chakvetadze, the tournament’s sixth seed, holds a commanding 3-1 head-to-head lead.
Last year’s runner-up and world No.7 Fernando Gonzalez (7) meets in-form Croat Marin Cilic in the second Rod Laver Arena match. Cilic is yet to drop a set in his first two matches and was impressive in disposing of Spanish 27th seed Nicolas Almagro in the first round.
The seemingly invincible world No.1 and three-time Australian Open champion Roger Federer graces the main court in the final day session match. The Swiss master takes on unseeded Serb Janko Tipsarevic, who upset 25th seed Fernando Verdasco to reach the round of 32.
In what could be one of the best women’s matches of the tournament so far, American eighth seed Venus Williams faces rising Indian star Sania Mirza. The two have played just once before with Williams a straight sets victor.
Then the match most have been waiting for takes to court. Aussie hope Lleyton Hewitt faces a difficult task in 15th seed Marcos Baghdatis. Hewitt was impressive in his first two matches of the Open but so too was Baghdatis. The Cypriot produced a thrilling five set win over Marat Safin to move into the third round.
The action will be almost as hot on Vodafone Arena with six seeds in action. On the men’s side third seed Novak Djokovic and American Sam Querrey do battle, while 12th seed James Blake clashes with Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean. Second seed Svetlana Kuznetsova and fourth seed Ana Ivanovic will also play their third round matches.

In quello che potrebbe essere uno dei migliori match del torneo, la tds n.8 americana Venus Williams fronteggia la stella nascente indiana Sania Mirza. Le 2 si sono già incontrate una volta in precedenza, con la vittoria dell’americana in 2 set.
Successivamente andrà in scena il match più atteso, il beniamino australiano Lleyton Hewitt affronta in un turno molto arduo la tds numero 15 Marcos Baghdatis. Entrambi in ottimo spolvero nei primi 2 turni, col cipriota che ha dato vita a 5 emozionanti set contro Marat Safin.
Sulla Vodafone Arena vanno in scena 6 teste di serie. Sul versante maschile. la terza testa di serie Djokovic se la vedrà con l’americano Sam Querrey, mentre la tds n.12 James Blake affronterà il francese Sebastien Grosjean. Un po’ off-topic, ma non troppo.
Tra streaming e tv ho visto alcuni spezzoni di partite giocate dal francese Tsonga in questi giorni e devo dire che mi sta impressionando tantissimo. Rispetto allo scorso luglio, quando fu battuto da Gasquet a Wimbledon, mi sembra molto più sicuro di se e molto più forte atleticamente, è diventato molto più rapido negli spostamenti e tecnicamente è bellissimo da veder giocare. A parte lo strepitoso servizio, ha anche un dritto di grande potenza ed è eccellente nel gioco al volo. In più, gli ottimi tecnici francesi gli hanno costruito un solido rovescio bimane, ma il colored sa anche giocare buoni back di approccio staccando la mano.
Se non si infortunerà nuovamente, io credo che la Francia abbia trovato (ma è più giusto dire prodotto) un altro top 10.

Tsonga ha giocato benissimo contro Garcia-Lopez, è diventato molto più consistente da fondo campo rispetto al 2007, soprattutto nel dritto.
Hewitt -Baghdatis sarà un match emozionante, l’australiano dovrebbe prevalere giusto per amor di patria.
Tipsarevic ha poche chances contro Federer, il serbo nonostante l’ottimo lavoro di Castellani resta ancora “leggero” fisicamente, sarà difficile per lui opporsi nettamente a Federer.
