Stessa finale per il secondo anno consecutivo al Country Club, ovviamente Federer-Nadal, e nel tennis open non era mai successo. L’ultima vclta con gli stessi due finalisti in due edizioni successive risale al 1939 e al 1946 (ci fu l’interruzione per la guerra…) quando giocarono Yvon Petra e Pierre Pelizza, due francesi. L’ultima finale due set su tre, invece, fu vinta nel 1993 da Sergi Bruguera in due set su Cedric Pioline.
Un’ora e 16 minuti e Roger Federer è volato in finale al Country Club, la seconda consecutiva. Ma Juan Carlos Ferrero all’inizio è riuscito a metterlo in difficoltà, conquistando due palle non consecutive per il 4-1 e un doppio break pesante (30-0 per Federer, 30 pari, 40-30, 40 pari, pallabreak, parità, altra palla-break ma un net beffardo di Federer ha cancellato la chance di Ferrero che poi, in conferenza stampa, l’ha molto rimpianta).
Da quel momento Federer ha ingranato la quinta, cedendo un punto dei successivi undici ma_ dato statistico ancor più importante _ conquistando 7 games di fila, per il 6-3 2-0 che alla fine si è rivelato vantaggio irraggiungibile: 6-3,6-4. La partita l’ha fatta Federer, come dicono i suoi 32 punti vincenti con 26 errori, mentre Ferrero ha cercato di limitare i danni, 8 punti vincenti e 9 errori.
“Federer mi è parso in gran forma, dopo che si è vanificata la mia chance iniziale…del resto con Nadal lo scorso anno aveva perso di misura a Roma dove aveva avuto due matchpoints, e anche qui a Montecarlo e a Parigi erano state dure lotte. Insomma Roger è fortissimo anche sulla terra rossa. Il suo dritto è il migliore del mondo e l’unica tattica possibile è cercare di metterlo in difficoltà sul rovescio e poi provare a finire il punto da qualche parte…” ha detto Ferrero che forse oggi vale più del n.21 del mondo, anche se non è quello che era n.1.
“Sono stato fortunato con quel net…Ferrero sbagliava poco e pressava. Io ho giocato bene sia in difesa che all’attacco, sono contento…All’inizio non era nemmeno facile concentrarsi…sulla terrazza c’era la gente che mangiava e non si sedeva, è stato chiesto un po’ di silenzio una volta, due volte, tre volte, avrebbero dovuto manifestare un po’ di rispetto per le 7.000 persone che erano lì, e anche per noi giocatori…Domani con Nadal (se vince…)? Sulla terra rossa l’anno scorso abbiamo disputato tre partite fenomenali, ma non sono mai riuscito a batterlo…e certo non lo batterò se mi dovessi limitare a ributtare la palla di là…E’ sempre interessante un match fra i primi due giocatori del mondo ma non è vero che io il mio spirito competitivo sia alimentato solo da Nadal…gioco un centinaio di match all’anno e lui lo affronto solo cinque o sei volte!”
Intanto mentre ascoltavo Federer in 23 minuti Nadal ha dato 6-0 a Berdych che è andato negli spogliatoi a fine primo set. Che stia poco bene? Il secondo set è stato più combattuto, Berdych ha fatto anche grandi numeri, ma non è riuscito a conquistare neppure una pallabreak sul servizio di Nadal, mentre un net sfortunato e un doppio fallò sono costati al tennista ceco il break all’undicesimo game e la perdita, 7-5, del secondo set.

TOMAS BERDYCH
Q. You were a little bit frustrated by the end of the game? You seemed like you have maybe frustrated by it.
TOMAS BERDYCH: I mean, after every single match when you lose, of course you are sad. You want to win, so, yeah, I’m a little bit sad. But, I mean, that was great week for me, semifinal, and it’s not so bad.
Q. Did you think you could have broken him? In the second set there was one game where you went for the forehand when it was breakpoint and seemed a bit annoyed that you missed that chance.
TOMAS BERDYCH: Yeah. In the second set I had a couple of chances, maybe one or two really small one, but I didn’t make them. And, yeah, then he’s much better on the clay so he take his chances and he won the match.
Q. What is the difference between Nadal on clay and hard courts for you?
TOMAS BERDYCH: For me it’s different surface. It’s absolutely different. He cannot if he’s hitting this hard spin then on the hard court it’s like half of the spin.
The balls are not so high and he cannot run as much as he can here on the clay. He cannot slide on the court and it’s absolutely different tennis.
Q. Why so difficult to break him more than everything, to get a breakpoint?
TOMAS BERDYCH: That’s tough, because he has a good percentage of the first serve. Then if you put the return in then you’re playing so much rallies. In the rallies he’s better. So it’s tough to win with him like four or five rallies in one game when he’s serving.
But when we play on the hard court that’s much different. His serve is not as good. And then when you make him a little bit more under pressure then I break him in the match like three or four times.
Q. How did you see Federer comparing going into tomorrow’s game?
TOMAS BERDYCH: I think he has a chance. He played three nice matches last year. All the three was in the final. I think he has a game to beat him.
Q. Do you think his game is now pretty much complete on clay, or is there still something he needs to maybe improve?
TOMAS BERDYCH: I don’t know it’s the right way to say what Roger needs to improve. I think that’s
Q. Just on clay is there anything?
TOMAS BERDYCH: I think he knows what he needs to improve or not, so I think he has a good chance to beat him.
INTERVISTA A RAFAEL NADAL
Q. What are I looking at, the paper?
RAFAEL NADAL: My stats. 48% inside serve.
Q. What do you think of the match?
RAFAEL NADAL: I think I’m playing very good game, no? I feel great on court all the time, especially in the first set.
Well, he start with some mistake, but I play very aggressive inside the court and play very long so he can’t play his game exactly. Because he play very aggressive inside the court and I play very, very well after.
In the second set I have my chance in the first game of the second with the passing shot of the forehand at 30 All. I made that shot, and, well, after that the match was very, very close.
SCANAGATTA Q. I against Federer it will the first match of the year, 2007. What do you think is the biggest change compared to last year, apart from the fact that this time you will play best of three?
RAFAEL NADAL: Tomorrow we will see what’s the change, no? But, well, I arrive here playing better than the last year. This tournament I feel so much better. I was play without too much pressure.
Last year I play very nervous all the time because I was defending a lot of points. This year I am defending the same points but I have the experience. And coming back from the American tour, I was playing very well there.
I’m happy with my game here. I know tomorrow is going to be a very, very tough match for me, and I hope him too. If not, going to be bad news.
I will try my best. I don’t know what’s the difference. It’s the same condition: He’s No. 1; I’m No. 2; it’s a clay tournament. Nice match.
SCANAGATTA Q. So you don’t see any change in his game at all?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don’t see too much changes, no. He’s the best right now and he always improving, but right now he’s playing very good and he’s the same like always. He always play good.
SCANAGATTA Q. You’re saying that you are playing better this year than last year the same time. Do you think he’s also playing better this year than last time?
RAFAEL NADAL: He?
SCANAGATTA Q. Federer.
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, if you remember last year before the final you have the videos. He was playing unbelievable tennis. He’s playing very well right now too. He’s in the final without losing a set. The numbers say that.
Q. For you, Rafa, what’s the importance of your recent win in Indian Wells in terms of your confidence?
RAFAEL NADAL: Hundred percent important, no? Start of winning a Masters Series before defending a lot of points is a very good start. Because after that, well, you can play with a little bit more calm, without the nervous of a lot of time without play in the finals.
So right now it’s easy because I play semifinal today and I play with a big confidence believing I can win. So if I was not winning Indian Wells, well, I am coming here with a lot of doubts. So right now I was arriving here with good confidence.
Q. Why did you decide to have a little training right now after the match?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah. I was focusing the tactics, practicing the tactic of tomorrow.
Q. Was it spontaneous?
RAFAEL NADAL: No. 48 percent inside serves. I just trying to have some serves inside. That’s it. I just having twenty minutes of serves, no practice.
Q. Do you consider yourself as the favorite tomorrow? You have one like 66 matches in a row.
RAFAEL NADAL: He’s the No. 1. Always he’s the favorite. Clay I have a lot of wins, 66 wins consecutive. But he’s arriving playing very well, and I will beat him sometimes on clay, but the last two times he beat me in: Wimbledon and Masters Cup in Shanghai.
And, well, I am not the favorite I think, no. I think he’s No. 1 and he start very good the season, too. He won in Australia, Dubai, and now he’s in the final. Going to be tough match.
Q. You have a same opinion of Federer about ATP problems and the calendar of 2009. Do you think that Federer has the same opinion of yours about which is the No. 1 on clay?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don’t know. You can ask him. You can ask him. But for sure I don’t know. It’s very difficult thing about this tournament in 2009. 2009 not got going to be a Masters Series, no? Because it’s one of my favorite tournaments, and in my opinion, one of the favorite of everybody, no?
It’s very, very nice place. Very nice atmosphere every day. The court was full almost every day. Unbelievable. Very, very nice tournament, and I hope that’s going to change. But I think it’s going to be difficult, no?
SCANAGATTA Q. You are Spanish, but we have never asked you I have never asked you about Madrid as a Masters Series. What do you think about that? Because that’s the tournament that makes all the problems because Madrid comes in the spring, Hamburg, Barcelona, Monte Carlo are going to suffer…. What do you think?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I don’t have too much opinion about that because I love the tournament of Madrid, but right now my opinion is perfect. Indoor is very, very nice tournament for my opinion. It’s the nicest indoor of the Tour for sure.
So I don’t know if that much going to be the same outside than in indoor. It’s very nice tournament. I love this tournament.
But the thing is, well, I don’t want this Montecarlo tournament go out of Masters Series, no? But I don’t know Madrid, I want to finish the Tour. But, no, I think we don’t want this tournament and Hamburg go out.
Q. Roger said that he would maybe like for the fans tomorrow to play best of five. What about you? For the fans in the stadium would you prefer to play best of five?
RAFAEL NADAL: He would prefer what?
Q. For the fans Federer thinks it would be best to play best of five.
RAFAEL NADAL: Me too. I prefer play best of five. It’s very nice matches, best of five always, and I feel more comfortable. The match is longer.
But, well, in this tournament I think we can play best of five 5, no? But in Rome it’s too difficult. If you play the final the best of five the same way last three years five hour match.
Hamburg it’s impossible, no? But there’s a good chance for the players, I think.

Qnd Roger si impegna e cambia marcia nn ce n’è x nessuno!..Oggi Ferrero ha giocato molto bene ma nn ho mai avuto l’impressione che potesse seriamente infastidire Federer!..Ora,visto che Roger ha giocato un pò - rispetto agli altri anni sul cemento americano,che ha fame d vittorie e che il Roland Garros è fondamentale x lui,credo che qst anno le sue chanche d vincere a Parigi siano aumentate!..Xò domani contro Nadal ne sapremo d +,anche se la finale è 2 su 3 e cambia molto!..Rafa resta cmq il favorito numero 1 in ttt i tornei sul rosso!..

Bravo Nadal e bravo Federer, mi dispiace per Berdych, nonostante non mi sia troppo simpatico, meritava qualcosa in più, oggi questa superficie nel tennis moderno mortifica il talento di un giocatore, oggi Berdych ha tirato dei colpi incredibili che già sulla terra verde sarebbero stati vincenti…peccato…federer è avviato all’ennesima sconfitta contro Nadal, speriamo non gli faccia troppo male.

E’ interessante che i due ‘bischeri’ a capo del ATP e della WTA ripetono all’infinito il ritornello che ogni novita’ e’ per far divertire di piu’ i fan del tennis e poi i due giocatori piu’ rappresentativi del tennis dicono che sarebbe piu’ bella la finale 3 su 5.
Per parafrasare la pubblicita’ di una carta di credito, certe emozioni non si possono comprare.
Domani, qualsiasi sia il risultato credo che ci sara’ da divertirsi.

INTERVISTA A RAFAEL NADAL
Q. Cosa stai guardando, sulla carta?
RAFAEL NADAL: Le mie statistiche. 48% di servizi in campo.
Q. Cosa pensi della partita?
RAFAEL NADAL: Penso che sto giocando molto bene, non trovate?
Ho avuto un ottimo feeling sul campo per tutta la partita, specialmente nel primo set.
Beh, lui ha iniziato con qualche errore, ma io ero molto aggressivo nel campo e giocavo molto profondo
e lui non è riuscito a giocare come avrebbe voluto. Lui per norma è molto aggressivo in campo ma io ho giocato molto molto bene.
Nel secondo set ho avuto possibilità di breakarlo subito nel primo gioco con il passante di dritto sul 30 pari.
Ho fatto un buon passante ma dopo, comunque, la partita è stata molto combattuta.
SCANAGATTA Q. Contro Federer sarà la prima partita dell’anno, 2007.
Quale pensi sia la più grande differenza rispetto all’anno scorso, a parte il fatto che questa volta si giocherà al meglio dei 3 set?
RAFAEL NADAL: Domani vedremo se ci sarà stata qualche differenza, no?
Però, io sto giocando meglio dello scorso anno. Mi sento molto bene in questo torneo. Gioco senza pressione.
L’anno scorso ero molto nervoso perché difendevo un sacco di punti.
Quest’anno difendo gli stessi punti ma ho più esperienza. E, dopo i 2 Masters Series americani, sto giocando molto bene.
Sono molto contento di come sto giocando. So che domani sarà durissima per me, ma spero che sia dura anche per lui (Federer), altrimenti… cmq, farò del mio meglio.
Non so quale sia la differenza, domani. Siamo nella stessa situazione: lui è il n.1, io sono il n.2, siamo sulla terra battura… Bella partita.
SCANAGATTA Q. Quindi tu non vedi differenze nel suo gioco?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, non ne vedo. Lui è il più forte e migliora di continuo,
adesso sta giocando molto bene e lo fa praticamente sempre.
SCANAGATTA Q. Tu dici che quest’anno stai giocando molto meglio rispetto all’anno scorso.
Secondo te, anche lui sta giocando meglio quest’anno rispetto all’anno scorso?
RAFAEL NADAL: Lui?
SCANAGATTA Q. Federer.
RAFAEL NADAL: Beh, se ricordate l’anno scorso, prima della finale, guardatevi i filmati, Roger giocava meravigliosamente.
Anche adesso sta giocando molto bene. E’ in finale senza aver perso un set. I numeri parlano chiaro.
Q. Per te, Rafa, quanto ha contato vincere Indian Wells per aumentare la fiducia in te stesso?
RAFAEL NADAL: Molto molto importante. Iniziare vincendo un Masters Series prima di difendere così tanti punti è veramente un ottimo inizio.
Soprattutto perché dopo puoi giocare un po’ più rilassato, senza il nervosismo di non giocare una finale da parecchio tempo.
Adesso + più facile, ho giocato una semifinale oggi con grande fiducia di vincere.
Se non avessi vinto Indian Wells, beh, sarei venuto qui con molto dubbi.. invece adesso ho grande fiducia.
Q. Perché hai fatto allenamento subito dopo la partita?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah. Mi sono concentrato sulla tattica, provando la tattica per domani.
Q. Ti è venuto spontaneo?
RAFAEL NADAL: No. Pensando al 48 per cento di servizi in campo… stavo provando a mettere dentro un po’ di servizi. Tutto qua.
Ho provato il servizio per venti minuti, nient’altro-
Q. Ti consideri favorito domani? Hai vinto 66 partite di fila.
RAFAEL NADAL: E’ lui il n. 1. E’ sempre lui il favorito.
Sulla terra rossa ho vinto molto, 66 partite di fila, ma lui ci arriva giocando molto bene.
Io l’ho battuto qualche volta sulla terra, ma le ultime due le ha vinte lui: Wimbledon e la Masters Cup a Shanghai.
Per cui, non penso di essere il favorito. Penso che lui sia con merito il n. 1, ha iniziato molto bene la stagione,
ha vinto in Australia, a Dubai, e adesso è in finale. Sarà un match durissimo.
Q. Tu sei d’accordo con Federer a proposito dei problemi dell’ATP e del calendario del prossimo anno, il 2009.
Secondo te, anche Federer la pensa come te a proposito di chi sia il n. 1 sulla terra battuta?
RAFAEL NADAL: Non saprei… chiedetelo a lui. Non so proprio.
La questione riguardo a questo torneo per il 2009 è molto complicata. In teoria non dovrebbe + essere un Masters Series…
Però è uno dei miei tornei preferiti, e, per quanto ne so io, uno dei tornei preferiti di tutti i miei colleghi.
E’ un gran bel posto. L’atmosfera è ottima, sempre. Questa settimana gli spalti erano sempre gremiti. Incredibile.
E’ un ottimo torneo davvero, e spero che all’ATP cambino idea, ma sarà durissima cmq, non credete?
SCANAGATTA Q. Tu sei spagnolo, ma nessuno ti ha mai chiesto, o almeno, io non ti ho mai chiesto a proposito di Madrid come Masters Series.
Cosa ne pensi? Perché è il torneo che causerebbe tutti questi problemi se venisse spostato in primavera… Montecarlo, Roma e Amburgo ne patirebbero assai. Tu come la vedi?
RAFAEL NADAL: Beh, non avevo una mia idea precisa, perché amo quel torneo, ma adesso me la sono fatta. Come torneo indoor è un torneo bellissimo, secondo me.
E’ di sicuro il più bel torneo indoor dell’ATP.
Però, non sono sicuro che come torneo all’aperto sarebbe ugualmente valido. Ripeto, è un bellissimo torneo indoor, mi piace tantissimo.
Però, non voglio che il torneo di Montecarlo esca dal circuito dei Masters Series.
Non ce l’ho con Madrid, chiaro, ma non vorrei che questo torneo (Montecarlo) e il torneo di Amburgo finissero fuori dai MS.
Q. Roger ha detto che, per i fans, preferirebbe giocare 3 set su 5. Tu cosa ne pensi?
Per gli spettatori, tu preferiresti giocare al meglio dei 5?
RAFAEL NADAL: Eh?!?!?!? Cosa preferirebbe?
Q. Per gli spettatori, Federer pensa che sarebbe meglio giocare al meglio dei 5 set.
RAFAEL NADAL: Anch’io. Io preferisco assolutamente giocare 3 set su 5. Sono sempre partite belle, e io mi trovo anche meglio, quando la partita si allunga.
Secondo me, in questo torneo, si potrebbe giocare al meglio dei 5 set.
A Roma invece è troppo difficile. Giocare una finale tre su cinque come gli anni scorsi, sarebbero 5 ore di gioco.
Ad Amburgo, è impossibile, secondo me. Però, giocare al meglio dei 5, dà + possibilità ad entrambi i giocatori.
